Risk of DVT after external beam radiation

Is there increased risk of DVT after EBR?
My dad is pondering perineal prostatectomy for low risk prostate cancer (gleason 7, psa 4.8).  He has a history of a post op pulmonary embolus that required an IVC filter which remains in place.  Trying to weight the various risk vs benefit.  Thanks.

Hi,

A DVT is a blood clot. The veins are vessels going back to the heart. The clot that forms a vein runs the risk of a clot getting torn off and subsequently blocking a vessel that feeds a segment of a vital organ like the lung.

Hi,
I know of no reported association between DVT and prostate irradiation. The blood vessel damage that does occur with radiation are generally small vessels particularly those involving erections. An operation if it requires prolonged immobilization will increase his risk for DVT. Hence, a laparoscopic or a robotic assisted prostatectomy would decrease this period dramatically.
It may be a good idea to discuss things with the radiation oncologist and the urologist, while there are some options out there – not all of them may be available to you.
Stay positive.
