My young daughter had to have a dental periapical x-ray due to breaking her teeth from a fall. At the time she was 2 yrs 9 months old.
In the x-ray room, my daughter went hysterical therefore the nurse held her by the jaw to prevent her from struggling, pulled the x-ray’s cone right up besides her mouth and took the X-ray shot. The cone was not attached to a long spacer. In fact, I’m not even sure if there was a short spacer. It just looks like an integrated part of the X-ray. The X-ray machine was not digital and I am unsure what film-speed it uses (D, E or F speed). She was wearing a lead apron with a collar (however, that is pointless because her neck is so small and thin, its not touching her neck).
I am wondering, due to the short distance of the x-ray cone from her mouth (it was practically touching her mouth), does this translate to a higher radiation dose compared to if the cone was about 40cm from the mouth?
