Lap Band Infection

My daughter had lap band surgery.  Two weeks later the lap band had to be removed because of infection.  After the lap band was removed it came to my attention that her pre operative lab work had shown she had a UTI.  My daughter is 20 years old, weighed 166 pounds with no health problems.  We have heard of no one else who had to have their lap band removed this soon after surgery because of infection.  It was not the incision sites that were infected but the lap band itself.  I am wondering if the UTI she had during the surgery could have caused the infection of the lap band?  Can any one answer this question?

Thanks.

2012 July. My son's best friends sister is in danger of dying right now due to lap-band caused infection. Her kidney's aren't functioning and she is going into surgury right now with a high risk of dying.  The entire family has been called in.   When will people be really told of how dangerous this surgery is?

Hi
Thanks for writing to the forum!
Well, UTI could not have caused infection of the lap band as such unless there was a systemic infection. Also the band could get infected due to surgery related procedures. Sometimes these unfortunate accidents happen due to nosocomial infections or hospital related infections. Not following proper sterilization procedures could be another reason.
Hope this helps. Please let me know if there is any thing else and do keep me posted. Take care!

I also got an infection after lapband surgery. I had my surgery Oct. 10 2009, was back in the hospital Oct 12,2009 had severe infection and had to have band removed. I ended up on a ventilator and almost died. As it turned out they found some of the equipment used in my surgery was improperly sterilized. I hope your daughter is doing better, as I know to well what a nightmare it is. I don't think we hear the horror stories of all the bad operations because it is bad for business. I haven't found a form anywhere online discussing this.
