cataract post vitrectomy and sclera buckle for detached retina

I suffered a detached retina in April 2010, I still can not see clearly out of the eye, and I have double vision now.  The surgeon said I now have cataract in the same eye, and will need surgery.  He said the gas that was used for the bubble had caused the cataract.
Is this a common problem after vitrectomy ? Is cataract surgery really going to help ?
My surgeon was not very good at explaining what to expect after repairing the detached retina.

Hi,
How are you? Possible complications of the surgery for retinal detachment include double vision (diplopia), elevated pressure in the eye (glaucoma), bleeding into the vitreous within the retina or behind the retina, clouding of the lens of the eye (cataract), or drooping of the eyelid (ptosis). Cataract surgery will definitely help when there is clouding of the lens. Discuss the operation with your doctor to ease any worries. Take care and do keep us posted.

Thank you for the info .  I am trying to be optimistic.   I do have diplopia and was told that I will need cataract surgery to clear up my vision. It seems like I have escaped glaucoma , ptosis and bleeding at this time.  The surgeon who performed the scleral buckle and vitrectomy do not do cataract, so I am now on the waiting list for a cataract surgery with another eye doctor.
When I look at my eye in the mirror, I do not seen any clouding or anything wrong with my cornea, just can not accept  that there is cataract.

Hi,
Although most cataracts are related to aging, other types of cataract such as secondary cataract, traumatic cataract, and congenital cataract are also present. Cataracts can form after surgery for other eye problems and can develop in people who have other health problems, such as diabetes. It is also linked to steroid use and previous eye injury. Cataract removal is one of the safest and most effective types of surgery. Take care always and do keep us posted.
