Is this cough just a virus?

Hi!  I have 3 children, the youngest is 5.  Her cough started out as a very harsh, moist that lasted over a week and a half.  Then my oldest got it, then my 2nd child, and then my husband.  My husband still has it, and has to sit up in bed at night because he has difficulty catching his breath when his coughing episode happens.  He went to the doctor last week and he only prescribed a cough med even though he said he heard a wheeze at the end of the expiration.  Now, my 5 year old has gotten it again, same cough,-it is worse during the night with her coughing so long and hard that she has tears in her eyes.  She may even have a low grade fever, but again only at night.  Is this just a virus going around?

Hey there.
I'm glad you got some possible answers and some kind of treatment, I hope it works for him.
I did take my daughter to the doctor yesterday and he did hear some wheezes.  He said that it was prob a virus also and that it left some wheezes in her.  She is on an albuterol nebulizer 3x day and we are supposed to go back next week.  She has had 4 treatments so far, no better, but we still have to give it more time.
hope everything goes well for you!

My wife just called and the doc put my 2 year old on Zithromax for a week and also perscribed a cough medicine to help him sleep at night. The doc also prescribed a medicine for the nebulizer that will help stop the bronchial spasms so when the coughing does occurr it won't last for 2 minutes straight and he can catch his breath. The doc said he thought it was viral and that there are upper respitory viral infections that produce just coughing and that's it and is sometimes associated with bronchitis and or severe allergies. The Zithromax was just in case there was any bacteria looming too.

So I guess that's it for now. I hope you family recovers well too.

Thanks.

Are there any other symptoms or just the severe cough. Have you read my post "ConfusedMan41" just posted a few minutes ago?
