Can you catch and STD or anything for that matter with brazilian waxing?

Hi there,

I went to the same salon twice to get a brazilian wax (they were all Asians).
I can't remember if she used gloves (I don't think she did). But I DO know that she double dipped the wooden stick and from watching some TV shows regarding this (Dr. OZ and Tyra Banks), I soon found out that you CAN get an STD and HIV and Hep C from contaminated wax. I called the salon after I saw these TV shows and they said that THEY DO NOT change the wax between clients and that the wax is safe, since the wax is kept at a hot temperature. I don't remember the wax being at all hot, but maybe lukewarm.
Should I be concerned that I caught something from these unsafe practices? I am so angry at them and myself... How could I not of thought about this before seeing the TV shows?!

PS I did bleed a bit during the waxing sessions.

I'm going to have to disagree somewhat with what Vance told you actually.  The info from the shows you watched is based on  good hygiene practices. I'm not sure it's a real risk for hiv or hepatitis though I'm sure there must be a case study or two out there that they mentioned it.  this was not a real  risk for std's but it is a potential risk for skin infections. the temperature of the wax is not high enough to kill all viruses and bacteria unfortunately.

all salons should be using single use wax cups and I'd never  go someplace that didn't to be honest unless they did nothing but facial waxes.  they also are not allowed to double dip unless it's a single use wax cup.

is it likely you contracted anything from this? no it is not but for the future, they should be gloved for waxing your genital/anal area and using single use cups for your protection.

if you really want to, you can contact your  local health department and report the violation for that establishment.  best way to get them to change their practices.

Thank-you so much Vance! I just feel so dirty knowing that they didn't clean wax now. You know what I mean?!

Dr.Oz is a joke when it comes to STD's and HIV. He does not have the qualifications like the Dr's on this website do. Also Tyra is not a Dr and can pull info from anywhere she wants.

You did not have a risk. STD's have that name for a reason.
