Red meatus - cause?

Hi,

I'm a 32 year old white male. On Jan 27th I had protected (used condom at all times) oral & vaginal sex with a white girl in a massage parlour in the southwest of the UK. She was menstruating at the time. Some of her fluids were in my pubic hair but not on my penis & the condom was taken off carefully (don’t believe it failed).

27th of Feb noticed tip of my penis (meatus) slightly red. Due to anxiety got frequent urination. I do have strange itching feelings sometimes in my penis, more so when really stressed.  Do not have burning sensation when peeing but starting flow painful / difficult. Do not have tender glands or swollen or painful testicles. Also have not noticed any discharge from my penis or stains in my underwear. March 3rd had a urine test done at docs for chlamydia & that was negative (was sent off for culture). March 4th I went to the GUM clinic. They took two urine samples (start & mid flow) after not urinating for 3 hours & also a swab from my urethra. They did a microscope examination of urine & swab & that showed no white blood cells or anything else abnormal. They also did cultures on the swab + urine & they phoned me up & said I did not have chlamydia, gonorrhea or NGU. They said they did not test for Trichomoniasis as they couldn't do this on a man (apparently Tich rare in UK). They did do a visual exam at the time & said they saw no signs of any warts, lesions or anything else abnormal (except the red meatus). I also bought & took (self prescribed) a 1000mg Azithromycin as a precaution (18th March).I also took fluconazol & cream for thrush for a week which made no difference at all. Started to get back ache & perineal pain. Currently 3 weeks into 4 week course of Ciprofloxin (500mg x2 daily) for Prostatitis (prescribed by doc).  Perineal & back pain gone 1 week into treatment. Also 5 days through a 7 day course of Metronidazole 400mg x2 daily (prescribed by doc after I pleaded with him to give me some but he thinks I don't need it). My Meatus still slightly red.

After 11 weeks I had a blood test for HIV, Hep B & Syphalis - all negative.  Wifes (had unprotected sex with her throughout this saga) last 2 periods were abnormally heavy (IUD fitted 5 yrs ago, she normaly spots and nothing else during period), she has been on over a weeks antibiotics & complains of white but slightly yellow discharge now.  My wife says her exterior genitals are sore / itchy – she thinks she has thrush due to taking lots of antibiotics (All prescribed by docs - Erythromycin 250mg 3days (changed due to no effect), then Amoxicillin 500mg 7 days along with Clarithomycin 250mg 7 days).  She does not complain of painful or urgent urination.  Also I am 100% sure my wife is faithful to me.

My questions are:

1. Could I have caught something by wiping the end of my penis with a tissue which has got girls fluids from the base of my penis on it?
2. Could an STD be living in my prostate & therefore not show up in the urine tests? Or do the ones likely to cause my symptoms all live in the urethra?
3. I had a urine test (sent to lab NOT dipstick) to check for prostatitis which showed nothing 2 weeks ago would this have shown any STD too?
4. If I had Trich, how long before the meds stop the symptoms & would the dose penetrate the prostate?
5. Could an STD cause my wifes sore throat, chest infection, sinusitis & middle ear infection?
6. Could engine oil / solvents cause the red meatus?  (I am a mechanic & sometimes forget to remove my dirty gloves when going to toilet).
7. Would the meds my wife took kill any STDs given to her by me (if I have one)?
8. I have the opportunity to have another urine test, will the antibiotics I'm on interfere with the results?
9. Could Stress & Anxiety cause all my symptoms?
10. Could the symptoms my wife has be an STD?

Sorry I know its a lot of questions but I would be eternally grateful to anyone who can offer sound responses to them.  I'm hoping people can alay my worst fears.

Thanks

odds are if the doc, who sees lots of genitals every single day, doesn't think it's a big deal, it's just you paying way too much attention to it. even just what underwear you wear and tight clothing can cause the opening to get a little red here and there. you have no other symptoms like pain with urination or itching so I'm totally going with the doc here to be honest.

is urex cap 5 available near you? your wife might want to try that. it's a probiotic with good research behind it to keep the "good" bacteria in her urogenital tract and reduce vaginitis.  I'm pretty sure it's still going by that name outside of the US and canada and I assume you are in the UK?

Hi Grace,

Thanks for the reply.  My wife and I do suffer from reccurring Thrush. The last couple of weeks I have been using Canesten alot. I've had thrush many times in the past and my meatus was never red.  When I have no normal thrush symptoms the meatus is still red.  My wife had a course of pessaries from docs which worked for a while but she has thrush symptoms again now.  Do you think it could be a tough fungus that wont go away?  The docs always says it doesn't look that red and its nothing to worry about.  I've given up on them as they just say it will go eventually.

Thanks

you sure this isn't something you usually have but just didn't pay attention to like this before?  it was protected sex so you know it wasn't a std from the encounter you had with another partner.

if it had been a fungal issue, odds are by now you would've had a worsening of symptoms.

what do your providers say about the redness when you are seen?

For the benefit of anyone who is searching the forums I have an update which may help.  I had another full PCR Urine STD screen test at the end of June which included mycoplasma genitalium and trichomonas which were the two items which the hospital did not check for (NHS does not have the tech at the moment).  The results: NEGATIVE.  My meatus is still red though.  If I get to the bottom of the problem I will update again.

yes, stress and anxiety can cause your symptoms so can antibiotics.. www.medications.com, type in the antibiotic you took and read what everyone has to say about it.

Hi,
thanks for the reply, the simple answer to your question am I nuts is possibly yes, or at least that's how it feels sometimes. I don't normally behave that way, I'm just worried. I'm glad you think this is not STD related but would you be able to answer my questions even if it's a simple yes or no?
Many thanks

Are u nuts? Self medicating is not the way to go. First of all It does not sound std related, you had protected sex, odds are you didn't catch anything. You over prescribed your self, me thinks you took antibiotics for no reason. Anxiety causes a lot of negative reactions to the body. If you ever think you have an std, what makes you think you took the right amount of doses? Just because you think its enough it may not be for you. This was all for nothing. Keep using condoms that's the smartest thing you've done so far.
