Syphilis testing accuracy

Hello,

I’m a Male in ontario and here’s my story: I received protected oral sex twice from a woman in November, about a week apart. In early December I had what I thought was a syphilis chancre, I was worried so I sent a picture to an online doctor using Maple and they said it wasn’t.

In Mid January I received unprotected oral sex from a man. Two weeks later I got sick with UTI symptoms: clear thin discharge, epididymal pain on one side, fever, and diarrhea. Testicle pain was so bad it radiates down my leg. I went in and got treated for UTI while my tests for chlamydia and gonorrhea were done. They came back negative but I was treated for those anyways. I also went for an ultrasound of my testicle but it only showed a small vesicle with septatation, apparently nothing of note.

I couldn’t wait for the HiV and syphilis testing for 3 months so I got tested in early march and it was negative. I also did my full STI screening again in mid April and everything was negative again.

My question is how definitive is syphilis testing? I just find it hard to believe this is all just inconvenient timing and would like some reassurance. Thanks in advance.

Your tests are conclusive. Your April tests include everything from November and January.

If you had something that wasn't included on the tests, like NGU, did the antibiotics clear it up?

Syphilis doesn't cause the pain you describe. It only gives you a sore - it's round and painless. The rest wouldn't be from syphilis.

If your symptoms are gone, and your tests are negative, you can move on from this.

They did check for NGUs as well and didn’t find anything either. My symptoms went away but I do still have occasional testicle pain in the same spot, but not as intense.

I think that’s why I can’t get over it, because there is no answer for what happened and it really seems like the best answer is syphilis.
You tested negative.  Your symptoms are NOT indicative of syphilis - syphilis doesn't cause the symptoms you described.  So really, the WORST answer is syphilis, since you do not have syphilis.  Keep working with your doctor to find the cause, but it's nothing to do with syphilis.
