syphilis chancre characteristics

I am wondering if primary syphilis chancres are always open sores (ulcer like)    or can they be like rough flat skin oval?   I read somewhere about crusted appearance and not sure what that means?

I am not sure if my second question went through.  are primary syphilis chancres always like the pictures online.. open sore,  ulcerated or can they take a different appearance?      like crusted flat spot on skin?

I looked them up.. all seem to be open sore, or ulcer.    but then I read where they can take on just about any appearance it makes me wonder,. would a primary chancre look like rough patch of skin?
