risks of STD's through oral sex

Hi, I am a 31 year old male who had sex with a prostitute in Malaysia 2 weeks ago. I used protection except when she finished by giving my oral sex and I made a point not to ejaculate in her mouth. Less than 10 days later I notice discharge and went to the clinic to be screened. The results showed I had gonorrhoea and NGU. I was given antibiotics and told not to have sex for 7 days.

Now I am concerned about the risk to my girlfriend and would really appreciate your help on the following;

1) My understanding is that the incubation period is 2-14 days and so I can be sure that it was this incident that infected me since I had not had sex for up to a month before. Is this correct?

2) What other STI’s am I at risk to that would take longer than 10 days to show up? i.e. HIV takes upto 12 weeks right?

3) Should I go back to be screened after 7 days to ensure the bacteria has gone?

Hi,

I have not had sex with my girlfriend an will not until I have finished the 7 days for the treatment and got the all clear.

all the evidence i have seen on this site is that is is virtually impossible to get HIV through oral sex, so there should be almost no risk to my gf after I take care of my current issue. We have not used condoms for the past year so I would need to inform her of my issue which would result in the end of our relationship. If the risk is really that low, I don't want to risk losing her for my stupidity!

is there any other reason i could use to say why the pill is not working and we should use condoms?

Not sure if you had sex with your girlfriend when you returned from holiday but if you were having sex with her, she will need to be treated as well. You are doing the right thing by making sure you are properly treated and have the gist of your situation. You must be sure to follow up because studies have shown, unfortunately, that gonorrhoea is becoming resistant to antibiotics. This is why it's often referred to as "the clap" because people think that they have been treated for it when they weren't and assumed that it some how returned.

As far as any other STIs goes, there is an incubation period as cutegirl provided. Some, under the right conditions (especially herpes), can manifest itself sooner. You are going to have to be careful with your partner and use protection with her for atleast 3 months just to make sure you all aren't constantly exchanging infections or very worst case scenario, haven't been exposed to HIV.

Best of luck with everything.

hi.. your understanding is actually right.. and very good that you have this thought of your girlfriend.. yes gonorrhoea is caused by a bacterium Neisseria gonorrhoea.. it's incubation period in males is 2 to 14 days and in females is 7 to 21 days.. so u r right that your encounter with the prostitute gave u this std..apart from gonorrhoea, syphilis is another std which takes at least 3  weeks,hiv 12 weeks. and herpes 20days.. it would be very good to go for this screening after 7 days as it shall assure u whether you are fit or not and can continue the antibiotics if required.. good luck..
