Hi, what I meant was get on birth-control pills, the kind of pill you take every day.  I wasn't talking about emergency contraception, which of course is also a pill, but you only take it in an emergency.

If you decide to go onto birth-control pills, drop into Planned Parenthood, they can give you excellent advice and also monitor you.  (I got my IUD there, in fact.)  They will be able to tell you that your first month on birth-control pills, you're not fully protected from possibly ovulating (and therefore possibly getting pregnant).  So, if you're thinking about getting sexual with someone, get an IUD or go onto birth-control pills now, in order to be ready if and when the time comes.  (Also, always use condoms at the same time, because they will protect you from STDs.)

If you're asking how long one would have to take emergency contraception after sex that was unprotected, that is a pretty short time, I think.  Within 48 hours is recommended, after 72 hours is considered too late.  But please understand that emergency contraception is for emergencies only.  It is a huge load of hormones, not very good for you.  Don't try using it regularly, it will be bad for your body.

Hi, if you are a girl, get on the Pill or an IUD, and use condoms as well.  The birth-control will protect you in the event of condom slippage or breakage.  If you are a guy and your concern is condoms breaking, all you can do is be ultra careful and use lubricated condoms.  A way to tell if a condom has a leak is to fill it with water and close the top with your hand and put pressure on it.  If it has a leak, the water will either drip out or squirt out of the hole.
