Second hand smoke on clothes?

If someone has just smoked a cigarette and they reek of smoke can breathing that in be harmful or is it not enough to worry about? I'm asking because I get frustrated with my husband because I've asked him not to hold our son right after he's smoked and yet he persists in doing this. I can be grateful, at least, that he does take the smoking outside but he'll come in and pick him up and hold him or sit on the floor and play with him right after he's smoked. I don't think he realizes how much he reeks of smoke right after he's smoked. He acts like I'm just nagging him or being picky and tends to ignore me when I ask him to please not hold our son right after he's smoked. Should I just let this go and be glad he wants to play with our son? Can he be breathing in this smoke that comes off his clothes, etc?
Thanks.

Hi April,

Would your hubby consider covering his clothes while smoking if he's going to be right near your son afterwards?  Something that would serve as a smoking jacket.

I wear an old flannel shirt each time I smoke to avoid the clothes reeking.  The shirt reeks, but you can just pop that in the washer every few days.  That way it's only one item of clothing that smells.  Kind of a hassle, but it works for me.  I go a little farther than I have just described, but I doubt anyone would do all the silly things I do to avoid smelling like smoke.

I'm glad you posted this question, April.  I wasn't aware of the third hand smoke fact.

Take care...

What a coincidence that I read this. I was talking with my quit smoking coach yesterday and she told me this type of smoke (on clothes, in cars) now has a name - third hand smoke which can also be dangerous. Try going to American Cancer Society for more information. I bet they have something on this.
