Anyone had a partial thyroidectomy

I asked a question, I think it was yesterday about needing to take thyroid meds after a partial thyroidectomy. I decided to start with a diff question. I only had to start on Synthroid (you could be taking another brand) AFTER my partial thyroidectomy. My Endo said that I needed to take it to keep the existing thyroid side from growing, which he said it would do because it would overwork itself being I only have 1 side now.
Anyone else been through this? Can the thyroid side that's left actually grow?

Thanks for responding so quickly. I never had a history of adenomas. When they did the ultrasound there was only one nodule. I don't have goiter. The path report from the surgery came back as no  cancer.  There is no known family history of thyroid problems.
Did you have some thyroid function tests done after your surgery? If so, is that routine? Then Endo I have seen ( by the way, only 3 times) First, to order biopsy, 2nd to give me the results, and third, after the surgery when he told me I needed the meds.
He was only going by  a TSH result on bloodwork I have done 2 weeks prior.

He did not tell me that if I had the surgery I would have to take any medication afterwards for the rest of my life.

If you have a history of adenomas which I think I read on the other post (going by memory here) there is a possibility it can happen again and be enhanced, I guess, by it being overworked.  But your TSH was .6 I think I recall .. I'd be leary to fully supress and take meds for this possibility ..... unless there was cancer involved I'd get a second and third opinion .. just my opinion.

Cheryl - parital 1/07 Synthorid 75mcgs TSH aprox 1.8 - other side stopped working after surgery
