Exercise recommendation for Hashi leg pain

Mary Shomon has recommended the T Tap videos. Anyone else try it? I was thinking of getting it to add to my wellness routine.

I have a strong recommendation if you have the budget.

The Wii Fit has helped my Hashi leg pain. I do the strength training, aerobics, balance games and Yoga. Every game seems tailored to help this restless leg thing I've got. If I go a day without the Wii Fit, I can feel it in my legs.

The only downside is that stupid Wii trainer always reminding me that my legs are shaking too much. Duh! I know I have shaky legs!

Supposedly some people get a little nauseated if they have this and get the toxins 'flowing'. I had several Physical therapist warn me of that - I'm lucky, I only get good side effects. A 'feel good' massage usually wont do this, only the real deep kind that almost hurt at first. The tecnic was studied and developed by a Doctor, MD, in the 50's and for gotten about. Now some Olympic trainers use it, younger PT's, some chiros and massage therapists - they use their elbow on a certain point for 20 seconds and release. I was told about a book to get - I have done this for a while now with body weight on a tennis ball on the floor. There is a tool called the Thera Cane for using on the neck, and upper back. It costs nothing if you learn it for yourself.  The book does point out that it is very beneficial for thyroid and Fibro patients. Since you already exercise, its just one more thing to try. It speeds my muscle recovery up. I even shortened shin splints last summer from a 12 mile wilderness hike to only 2 days, much longer in the past.

This doesnot have any relation to the first post other than hypo body pain itself. I've commented about body pain a lot here, so this is a repeat of a repeat, but good to know. T3 hepled me a lot, but in addition it helps to manually relieve tight muscles by learning trigger point muscle release. Every one has trigger points but dont know it untill they apply pressure to a tight area, and find out it hurts.  Most have never heard of this nor do most understand it, but its worth any one trying it out since it works after awile. Low impact or high impact hypos muscles dont recover correctly and hold in lactic acid and are depleted of magnesium. By manually applying hard force to the trigger point knot you push out the toxins and new blood fill the void in the muscle, instant relief. I just did this after sking the first time this year, (I couldnt do that this time last year!) Google it or look up a workbook at the library. I do this less and less, but so far one year. There are many tight areas on the legs and hips and they are all connected causing referred pain. Common in the calves too, thats a difficult place. I know I am the only one that mentions it here, if it did not work I would not be suggesting it. You know why sometimes stretching dosent work? this is why. Hope you try it some time.

I think you need to pick a low impact sport.

You have said that your Vitamin D is low. Calcium needs vitamin D for absorption. Your bones will suffer if your D is low for too long.

I've never been a runner, but I think running, itself, can cause shin splints.  You may have to pick a different sport.

Tamra -- good luck with the gym.  I thought about doing that, but once again, if I don't have the time/energy to use the equipment and dvd's that I already have at home, there's no reason to believe I will make good use of a gym membership either.  When I'm working, I have to get up at 3:30 am in order to make it to work on time; by the time I get home in the afternoon, I'm just too tired to do a lot of exercising, along with running the household, cooking, laundry, paying bills, etc. And I go to bed around 7:00 pm; exercise too close to bed time makes me wired and I can't sleep.  I know I have to carve out a time and declare that as MINE, but it's hard to do that.

About leg pain....can vitamin D deficiency cause shin splints? I started running last year in P.E. and was up to almost ten minutes without stopping but after a couple of months working out at the Y starting back in January I developed them and had to stop running. I couldn't walk after running or even squat without major pain. I switched to an eliptical and this eliminated pain and allowed me to still work out before I had no energy and stopped working out completely. Of course I could only dream of running any more than 2 mins now but I discovered while just running around playing a few weeks ago my shins STILL hurt. I've been on several months of rest from running. I'm taking a presctiption once a week vitamin D supplement now. Will it help? Then again I had been taking vitamins even then and they had it...I only stopped for a couple months during the summer.

I had just about every Billy Blanks tapes. Not CDs. I loved them. I think I threw the tapes out when I got my DVD player. I will have to look up his DVDs. I do the boxing on the Wii, but there's no kicking.

I used to have the most awesome Buns of Steel tape, but I wore it out!

I rejoined my gym, and I start this January. If the yoga trainer is a total butt about my shaky legs, then I might try your yoga video.

Thanks!

Lucy, make sure you are getting your Vitamin D. We Hashis tend to be low in D and B12. I know when my D was low, my leg cramps were worse. I used to do advanced spinning and aerobics. That was three years and 25 pounds ago.

Before I started having HYPO symptoms two years ago ( diagnosed two months ago) I taught cardio kickboxing, ran 6 miles 2 times a week and lifted weights. I can only manage swimming at this time as I am finally getting some treatment for HYPO Hashi's. I look forward to getting back to those days. Swimming has been good for me but it does still take a lot out of me. I was able to run up stairs four months ago, now I can barely walk up.

I use the Wii Fit also and *I* get tired of having them tell me "That's over weight".......duh!!  Why else would I be busting my rear?      LOL

I won't try anything else until I've gone through all the things I have already that I can't get myself motivated to use.  No point throwing away more $ on something else to lay in the drawer.

One thing I *will* recommend though is the dvd "The Biggest Loser - Yoga for Weight Loss".  It will kick your butt and make you stronger.  Will definitely help those shaky legs and there's no trainer telling you things you already know.  This dvd was recommended by one of the members on Weight Loss and Dieting and I found it at Wal Mart for $10.........Love it and recommend it everyone.
