requesting lab work

how do you pose these requests to your dr?  I want to request for a vit d and magnesium level. I have before for things like a free t4 and free t3, and they act like, thats not necessary. I do persist, but I was wondering if maybe some other way to approach it, so that they think it is their idea> With their HUMONGOUS egos, they like that.....

I just come out and let my endo know what different tests I would like run and if he doesn't go along with it I let him know that I or my insurance company is paying the bill and that it makes it easier to do more than 1 test on the blood they take.  My internist ( who is great)  lets me decide what blood work I want done. I would be sweeter to my endo but he is a jerk and I just let him know that I won't hesitate to kick him to the curb.

I like nellster's idea!!!

Also, you could let them know you're having, or think you're having, symptoms of low mag and/or vit d.  I just made the same request for mag because I'd been having more frequent leg cramps at night.  He just added that to the script for the thyroid, calcium, etc. stuff.  Of course it wasn't so bad that day so everything came back normal - figures.

It shouldn't be an out-there request since all this stuff is tied together anyways, right?

On the other hand, the way some of these people think...I'd go with nellster's reverse psychology tactic.  Maybe stroking an ego or two will get you farther!

Good luck.
