Hastimoto...pro and con of thyroid removal

What is the pros and cons to removing the Thyroid? Is it possible to get better with just the thyroid mediation?

Or medicating with no Thyroid?

Anyone, thoughts, opinions, or experiences?

The benefits of TT for Hashi's usually don't outweigh the risks of surgery.  My endo only recommends it in cases where the thyroid is so inflamed that swallowing and/or breathing is compromised.

It's best to start out low and increase slowly with thyroid meds.

Hashi's will ultimately "kill" your thyroid.  My endo and I both think mine is effectively dead since my meds haven't changed in a few years now. Once that happens, you're on 100% replacement, and things get easier.

Thank you so much for answering. I just had my  ultra sound done and am waiting for the report. Still on low dose Medication and am waiting for my 6 weeks to see how I feel and maybe then do another test, as I know I will need to go up in Medication. How much i am not sure...I like to do things slowly.
I come from the background, "if it is broken...fix it"...so I guess when I learned that I had Hastimoto ...well, my first thought was to remove it if it is not working....I guess the coming months of the new year will hopefully give me some answers.
Thanks,
Mia

I don't know your individual circumstances, so this is a difficult question to answer.

"Is it possible to get better with just the thyroid mediation?"  For most of us, yes.  TT is seldom recommended for Hashi's unless there are extenuating circumstances.  Most of us on this forum who have Hashi's still have our thyroids.

Medicating with no thyroid can be less of a challenge since replacement of thyroid hormones is 100%, and there is no fluctuation in the amount of hormone put out by the thyroid.  However, after TT, there are still the same issues of regulating levels that there were before.

Has a TT been suggested to you?
