Hyper symptoms with Hypothyroid??

Hello. I was diagnosed with Graves in July of 08. Had RAI done the same month. Officially turned hypo in Ocotber 08--started on Levothroid. Am still on Levothroid 88mcg. Last week I went to get my labs done because I was having hyper symptoms (anxiety, sore legs and arms, 2 bouts with a rapid heart beat--one in the grocery store, the other at home, become out of breath when standing for long periods) The labs came back as me still being hypo. TSH was 6.8 and Free T4 was 1.5. I have been checked for the thyroperoxidase antibody which came back negative (I'm guessing this is the Hashimoto antibody test). I addressed this with my PCP and the Endo who both think it's anxiety. I do have underlying anxiety however, I get so confused now because when I was Hyper I had all kinds of anxiety too. Please HELP! I feel like I'm going crazy.

It took me a long time to finally get all my levels normalized on Synthroid and I never did feel really good.  We adjusted my dose for an entire year...that's how long it took for my thyroid to finally disappear. You still have antibodies which can play havoc on the part of your thyroid that may still be remaining.

Have you been tested for adrenal fatigue or do you take anything for it already?  If you were hyper like me (I am guessing for a couple years), your body is in a total readjustment period and it will take time.  Rest, eating right, less caffeeine and moderate exercise.  I didn't drink coffee for about three months after RAI while I tried to let my body heal.

It's an upheal battle all the way, but hang in there!  Give it a little more time and if you don't feel better, talk to your doctor about trying a natural thyroid medication like Armour instead.

Debbie :)

I have had anxiety with BOTH Hyper and Hypo.
I first believed whilst Hyper (before RAI June 2008) that as I was so used to being anxious and hyper that the anxiety and panic only existed whilst Hyper.
Boy was I wrong!
Believe me....you can have anxiety at both ends of the scale.
With a TSH of 6.8 you are most definately HYPO.

I had, and am still dealing with a similiar situation.  I have been dealing with Hypothyroidism for the last 13 years.  But my blood work is usually delayed. I usually feel  the imbalance way before it actually shows in my blood work.   I had blood work done in Nov, and it showed normal.  Then, after 2 months, I had another one done in January, and this time it finally showed as being high (Hyper). I also had burning in my back.  Though, no doctor  was able to diagnose exactly what it was, they did not diagnose anxiety either (like most do).  But, unfortunately, I also thought that it may have been anxiety, and I am glad I hung in there.  Because, as my thyroid being regulated the burning has subsided drastically.  It sometimes takes up to 3 months for my Thyroid to become under control.  Thyroid is a crazy thing.
Good luck.
