Low calcium and Vit D

I got my Vit D tests back today, and if you recall I kicked butt to get them tested in the first place. My calcium has been low for a very long time, and after the TT in Dec 07 they dropped incredibly. So Lab range 60-160 nmol/L....mine is 33. The poor doctor nearly fell out of his chair when I punched the air and yelled YES! I TOLD YOU SO! Hee hee.
Big thing is that the research I have done shows auto-immune disease is commonly related with Vit D deficiency, which without Vit D you can't absorb calcium well.
So just goes to show you really need to get out there and force the issue or at least change doctors, to get results.
Mind you I have no idea if having Hashimoto's long term is the cause of low Vit D or not, but I WILL get to the bottom of this eventually!!!

Found this on the Health Science institute of America sight on Vitamin D deficiency.
Quote...You'll pick up about 12,000 IU of vitamin D with just 10 minutes of direct sunlight exposure.
And the next time you visit your doctor, ask him about testing your vitamin D level with a "25-hydroxy vitamin D" blood test – the most accurate test for determining vitamin D deficiency. unqote..
bestest.

SUGGESTION: request that PARATHYROID be tested! This is part of Thyroid that regulates amounts- If damaged, cancerous or nodules- this could cause the issue. Also, are you all aware of what FOODS, Meds, & supplements can inhibit your Thyroid medication? And taking your Thyroid Meds as directed? Ask your DR & Pharmacist for the info- it could save you a lot of heartache & health issues! It was my main issue after Thyroidectomy.

I have the same problem as you, and it has taken forever for it to be recognized.

I am on the same quest.  Perhaps as we go along, we can compare notes.

You know what amazes me is that I already take multi-vitamins, eat tuna, salmon, and eggs, and get plenty of sunlight..(bit hard not to in Australia!) I am sure I eat other things that give me Vit D. So my goal is to know work out why my body just won't absorb it!
To pep88 Yes I will let you know!

Hi I am glad you finally got heard I have alway insisted on full test with a copy to me for over 10 years because I am a firm believer that your body cannot repair and maintain itself without the full quota of vitamin and minerals.
We have got so far into instant fixes and billion dollar pill industries that we don't take care of our basis requirements of vitamins and minerals to keep our bodies in perfect health we waiting until they fall over then have to suppliments to fix them. Even back in my mothers days they new that vitamins and minerals were essential and we were given Cod liver all (teaspoon every morning during winter) and had to be outside in the sun and take or orange and apple everyday and we were never sick
Make sure you get a copy of the results bestest.

Let me know when you do!  I had the exact same experience with my doc as yours and I think I had the exact same calcium result too!  Very low Vit D as well.  Mine was not from hashi's though.  TT in Sept '07 and RAI in Nov.  It's taken forever to get my levels back up and I'm still not sure why they ever got so low.  I'm betting you will figure it out though...  When you do, please let me know.
