Why would I have a lump in my thyroid area if my thyroid has been removed?

My thyroid was removed completely 13 years ago.  The past few months I am noticing that when I swallow I get stuff stuck right in that area and it hard to swallow.  It wakes me in the night hurting also .  It's not a sore throat, it's the feeling like I'm gonna choke and I panicked.  This even happens when I take my pills.  Any ideas on what is happening?

At this point it would be speculation only.  Why not get an ultrasound test done first and that should reveal what is going on?

Get other testing done to rule out the potential for a more serious condition. A friend of mine on another internet board is in the hospital for epiglottitis and it was build up of symptoms (pain, choking, unable to drink or eat without choking). She should be released today if she passes a swallow study but was in the ICU for the past three days.

Get checked out and get the necessary tests.
