Mystery Diagnosis

I am a 45 year old male who had not been to a Dr. in 10yrs until Sept.07. Started riding a bike 2 to 3 miles in the morning. One day not long after had an episode where my arms and legs went weak and started cramping, had palpitaions with tachardia, called 911 and went to ER. A cardiac work up was completed and showed nothing. Since then I have had a full cardiac work up including a heart cath. again all was normal. Went to an Endocrinologist and had a 24 hr urine done, tsh, antibodies, and a thyroid uptake scan, again all came back normal. I have presently went to Neurologist who did an MRI of the head with contrast, was checked for MS and  Mastivia Gravis, He said these were also negative. He is sending me to the diagnostic Neuroscience center at Duke Medical University for further eviluation. Not sure if a Neuro or Endo problem? My wife has hyper thyroidism as does my mother. They both say that my symptoms are related to my thyroid even though test show negative. My question : is it possible to have thyroid problems and it not show up in bloodwork or uptake scan? They both say it is possible. I'm not sure? If it is possible how can you tell if it is thyroid for 100 percent? I presently am also experiencing pain in back of my head in my neck area. My wife also has similar pain if she misses her thyroid medicine. Any comments or help with my mystery diagnosis would greatly be apreciated. I also posted on the Neurological forum. THANK YOU!!!

I have had adrenals checked by endocrinologist in a 24nhr urine test. Normal. Unfortunately my endo was an el quacko though. I begged him to check my testosrone levels and all he would say is "I do not see any use in doing that."  I had to have my urologist order the bloodwork which came back 125 and min should be around 200. The other thing which has never been checked is my pituitary. Not sure if relative although I do know the pituitary can be related to low testostrone levels. Does anyone know what causes rear head pain at the neck in a hyperthyroid person? My wife is hyperthyroid and if she misses her synthroid she will have pain in the neck in my same location? Not sure if related but still would be interesting to know. Thank You all for your help and I appreciate all input. How about it Doctors? Can you help a man in brown get to the bottom of this??

Excellent point Scarlet and I was looking toward that too. Tsh thryroid test are complicated - If you could dig those up - that would be wonderful to post.

It does sound somewhat Oxygen related and maybe a little thyroid. No one should speculate this for you - but posting your exact lab numbers could influence or dismiss some issues.

Hi there man in brown- thanks for the timely deliveries!!!  ( hoping that's what your name means!)

Although it is possible to be thyroid related, thyroid symptoms are not specific to the disease and mimic many others. Low testosterone could infact cause the fatigue and libido but the neck pain and weakness in your arms and legs suggest something else.

My recommendation is to have an MRI with contrast of your cervical spine, it is possible that you have a pinched nerve or a disc out of place. This could cause the pain and numbness you describe.

I also recommend a sleep evaluation done. Not enough Oxygen in your body could cause the symptoms you describe including the heart palps. Do you snore? Wake up gasping for breath? Wake up disoriented? Nod off at inappropriate times during the day? Do you have bizarre dreams?

Just my thoughts on what I have experienced over the last 2 yrs in addition to thyroid.

Best wishes

Getting your adrenals checked would be a good idea.

Ask for a copy of your results an post your TSH, FreeT4 and Free T3. Maybe your levels aren't quite right. Symptoms sound a lot like Hyperthyroidism, but it could be adrenals.

Is there an echo in here? :)

Had a twenty four hour blood pressure monitor Dr. said blood pressue was ok. I do also get occasional red faced flushing incidences. Dr. said could be a result of testostrone injections. Have high tryglycerides cholestrol was 250 but is now down to 185 with fish oil tabs only. (Could not take statins. I tried but they also gave me pain and weakness in arms and legs.)   Thanks  (UPSMAN)

Still have palpitations not sure of ranges on test results for thyroid. Still have severe fatigue with weakness in arms and legs and pain in back of head at neck. I also have low testostrone levels (Getting injections now which haved helped a little.) Not sure if related but possibly related with pituitary gland. (Urologist said "Oh your just getting old".) He scheduled no further testing as to why my testosrone and libido were so low. Occasional night sweats but not often. (Upsman)  Thank You!!!!

What were your results from the thyroid test, ie., TSH, T4, T3?  Sometimes the normal range to the doctor is not always the normal range for you.  Has this happened again? How are you feeling otherwise, any palpitations, high blood pressure??  Could you have been dehydrated?  Post back with results.  There are others here that might have some reason for this.  keep checking post.
