hypothyrodism

Can someone please tell me that my anxiety levels will subside with the use of levothyroxine? Just started taking it Tuesday. Anxiety is off the charts. Are they any supplements I should be taking? I just didn't want to take them right now while getting use to the medicine. Anyone have success with accupuncture for anxiety and hypothyrodism? I'm desparate, please please help! No negative comments please. My anxiety can't handle it......

Thanks!

Not to drag this out but magnessium is easy to start and has nothing but benefits for any North American. Most take it at night, helps sleep and eases sore muscles from its relaxing effect. It also help you be "regular" in the AM and this is how your needed dose is calculated. Most end up at 400mg per day.

But the Magnessium must end in "ate" to be effective. Regular magnesium (oxide) is purely a laxative that does not provide cellular support.

I recently wrote a post on it:

Functional medicine is a newer term and different than holistic or natruopath in the approach to the cause.

www.functionalmedicine.org/practitioner_search.aspx?id=117

Dont get overwhelmed with all this info. Keep it simple first. You should be able to find a half decent regular MD that treats hypothyroid by t 3 and 4 levels instead of just tsh, then see how your symptoms may improve. Then go from there. You can treat many symptoms with natural herbs. But there is no replacement for thyroid hormone except to take more thyroid hormone.

Please define "functional MD" as I am unfamiliar with this term. I am curious even though I have a modest income. Thanks,

"What is your experience hypothyroidism, adrenal fatigue, anxiety, and stress?"

- Personal experience with all the above. Then top it off with tick borne infection for icing on the cake (yipee).

Like many people, I had hypothyroid symptoms for years before being diagnosed 15 years ago. That is hard on the whole body. T4 meds were not the answer for me, the old Armour natural pigt4/t3 combo worked better for my symptoms and I've been on other brands of pig thyroid since then. This improved but was not a cure all.

Many need more that just thyroid med at the level that works for the individual. It helps to learn all this on your own- regular MD's are not the best in this area of medicine. Functional MD's are usually better, but you have to pay them.

Start simple, thyroid T4 med if you need it, see how it goes. For some thats all they need. It deepends how much damage was done to the body while hypo. Weak adrenals are best tested (you pay) by saliva testing. Your Canadian "gov med system" MD will not do this. Goggle it. Genvoa diagnostics in USA. If thyroid is optimal, and one feels wired and tired- its most likely adrenal fatigue. Goggle adrenal adaptogens. I like holy basil capsules myself, but thats me.

Goggle magnessium, medhelp, you will find some threads here from myself and goolarra about magnesium. The best mag test is called red blood cell mag test, and even that is not very accurate. Mag that ends in "ate" is best, again, goggle, start at 400mg per day, usually night,. Must be 3 hours from thy med. If you needed it, you can feel it. Again, goggle this.

Asking a regular doctor about thyroid and expecting a good outcome is pure luck, dont expect a regular doctor to know this other stuff, they wont. Best to learn on your own. Your starting.

I just learned the following after making my previous posts and I wished to share it.

Excerpt from http://www.greenmedinfo.com/blog/magnesium-deficiency-symptoms-and-diagnosis

Magnesium deficiency is often misdiagnosed because it does not show up in blood tests – only 1% of the body's magnesium is stored in the blood.

Most doctors and laboratories don't even include magnesium status in routine blood tests. Thus, most doctors don't know when their patients are deficient in magnesium, even though studies show that the majority of Americans are deficient in magnesium. - Dr. Mark Sircus 2013

I live in Canada.

Hi, Please read my reply to LazyMoose.
I'm sorry you are so anxious on medication I should think it might help alleviate some of the anxiety. I hope it will subside soon.

What can you do to try to calm or soothe yourself? Do you drink herbal tea, listen to some relaxing music or natural sounds?

I wish to share with this thread that I am anxious too and I am not on any medication for hypothyroidism or emotional issues. I believe it is in part due to life circumstances and my nature, but I also feel it is partly due to my thyroid and possibly adrenals  I am under chronic stress yet the doctor has not tested my adrenals even when I once suggested it might be a good idea. I'll have to try again. It concerns me that thyroid medication can affect magnesium because I also read that Vitamin D supplementation can affect magnesium. I wonder if this is an issue for me as I have some symptoms such as insomnia, muscle cramps (sometimes in calves in the night), and anxiety and I take Vitamin D because I don't get enough sunshine in winter in Canada.

What is your experience hypothyroidism, adrenal fatigue, anxiety, and stress?

As many know,  anxiety is a common symptom when hypothyroid.

Raising hormone levels with replacement thyroid hormone can eliminate this in some but not all people, and mand did not have anxiety before going hypo.

Part of the anxiety problems hypothyroid people have is thyroid replacement hormone can have an effect on magnesium in your body, levels, and cellular use on magnesium apparently. A good quality of magnesium that ends in "ate" can help. Mag oxide does nothing beneficial to you.

Many hypothyroid people have weak adrenals which can creates  anxiety from even minimal stress. There are  6 or so safe, popular herbal adaptogens that help for adrenal induced stress/anxiety. Each works a little different on different individuals, but you will notice something. As an added benefit, they are not pure chemicals, and usually do not have side effects.

I get terrible feelings like I am going to jump out of my skin and feeling like I drank lots of coffee whenever I become toxic on the thyroid medication to treat my hypothyroid condition.

If your anxiety level is worse on the medication then prior to taking the drug, you could very well be experiencing one of the many side effects of thyroid medication. Perhaps the dosage needs to be reduced and then gradually increased so that your body can adjust to the drug.

If you're in the U.S., your doctor is required, by law, to provide you with a copy of your lab report, upon request.  You should always get a copy and keep it for your records.  I write on each lab report, what med I was on and what, if any symptoms I had when the blood draw was done; my labs have become a running record of my disease.  By keeping my labs and noting symptoms and meds, I know how I felt at each level so I know which numbers to target.

I had severe anxiety, as well.  I was on Buspirone for a couple of years, but have now been off it for almost a year.  I've heard that acupuncture can help some, but doesn't always.

I get it too with dose changes.  It usually takes about 2 weeks to calm back down each time.  I use Xanax to help me through.

I've never tried acupuncture, but yes, I have bad anxiety with either hyper or hypothyroidism. I take Xanax to help me, myself, but it still can be bad.

Why don't you let us try to help ease your anxiety a bit, by telling us what your actual thyroid hormone levels are (be sure to include reference ranges with all results.  What dosage of levo are you on?

I don't know if your doctor told you or not, but it does take 4-6 weeks for the levo to reach full potential in your blood, so it will take some time, but if your anxiety is thyroid related, the levo should help alleviate it.

Do you have other symptoms of hypothyroidism?  Do you know if you have Hashimoto's Thyroiditis?
