level normal

Hello
I am new on this community.  I am 33 and have suffered hypothyroid for 7 years always taken my meds (low dose levothyroxine).  I am presently feeling awful - pain, fatigue, depression.  Although I take my meds faithfully I still remain at level 4.6.  Is this too high for being medicated?  I truely appreciate any suggestion, info, or understanding.
Thanks

If your TSH is a 4.6, then you are still hypo and undertreated. The new ranges for TSH are .30-3.0. Most feel good at or around a 1.0.  BUT.....TSH is a pituitary function test. You need to have a Free T4 and Free T3 tests done.....these are the actual active thyroid hormone levels in your body.

thank you for the info laura - are these T4 and T3 tests done in routine thyroid bloodwork or is this something for a specialist?

They are right on the lab sheet your Dr uses. Even a primary dr can order these tests. :)

To add to what Laura said -- a lot of doctors don't think it's necessary to test for the Free T4 and Free T3 - especially the Free T3, so be prepared to insist.
