Hi!
I am delighted to know that y ou are researching this aspect of Tourettes
My son, who is now 30, was diagnosed with Tourette's at age 12.
Actually, I helped make the diagnosis with my pediatrician, at the time.
My son's motor tics are on the 'Mild' side. He can easily 'Hide' them or blend them into
his daily routine. Our neurologist, very very talented, in Philadelphai, noted that my son, 'Swallowed' so to speak, or held down his vocal tics.
These kids are very very very gifted, intelligent and>>>>>>> ARTISIC !!
As for ou son's childhood.
Like the writier before, he had a very , not authoritarian, so to speak father,
but a father who had a temper, and really 'Burst it out' at a moment's notice.
It affected all of us, myself, and my other son and daughter {still does}
I believe that if a child is affronted with these behaviors as a pre-schoolerto even a
a teen, that these 'sensory overbearing, loud, and out of control behaviors from a parent,
More of that from a father to a son, can trigger an early onset of tourettes.
Tourettes IS HEREDITARY. So It is Not Only Authoritarian Parental actions that
cause this, BUT I HAVE SEEN IN OUR SITUATION, an Increase in tics and just plain
needing to be removed from a verbally, threatening situation, no matter how brief.
It is similar to anyone who has gone through being confronted with a "fight or Flight"
reaction ensuinjg
"Tourettes', is really an underdiagnosed neurological condition beccause its
symptoms CAN BE VERY MILD. Often these children are treated as "Behavior
Problems" in schools becuase of disruptice "outbursts" which are absolutley
uncontrollable.
We transferred our son to a private school, which actually was an 'Alternative"
School which had A LOT of freedom for movement and for creativity.
He is now living a n amazing life, has a degree, travels a lot, is very very independent
and creative { graphic design}. Life continues to be lived however with dealing with these motor tics for life.
Good Luck
I have the chronic motor tic. For your question my father is very authoritian, but I got lots of other risk factors too. I've got AD/HD (the tics started while I was using meds for that, but never stopped after I quit) and also I've been in a car accident with head-injuries.
Good luck with your thesis =)
