Mixing Medications

My husband suffers from Epilepsy due to a gunshot wound to the back of his head, he started having seizures almost innediately after. He was prescribed Dylantin which was switched to Keppra. His neurologist recently added Trileptal to balance his levels because he was having seizures so often. His therapist also prescribed him Celexal and Elavil for depression medication due to bipolar disorder. Now it seems that the 2 anti-depressants have a side effect of seizures, which causes him to seize more than usual. Should the 4 meds be mixed, Keppra, Celexa, Elavil and Trileptal?

Thanks

Hi
Welcome to the MedHelp forum!
Yes, Elavil especially can cause seizures as a side effect. Please inform his neurologist and therapist regarding this. A different medication can be tried and dose of other medications adjusted. Take care!

when he saw his neuro and therapist he should have told them what he was taking, that way they would make sure that the meds they prescribe don't react badly to each other.

i think you should try get them together to have a chat with both of them. there are some anti-epileptics out there that actually act as mood stabilizers as well, the two that i know of is sodium valproate and lamotrigine. i'm not too sure if they can be used for dual purpose but it's worth a shot right? if he can cut down the number of different meds that he's taking it could make his life a lot better

take care
