At rest racing heartbeat

I am 29 years old.  I have been working for over 6 months now to get in shape, lose weight, and just get healthier.  I have been eating a diet of lean meats, veggies, very little salt, and absolutely no caffeine.  I have lost 40 pounds now since January simply by eating right, walking 2-3 times a day, and taking my vitamins that a doctor had suggested.  I am in better physical shape including my cholesterol levels that I have ever been before in my adult life.
I started having episodes where my heart races and flutters.  It will be beating at nearly 120 beats a minute sometimes even more.  There is no chest pain, heartburn, or anything else that comes with the racing heartbeat.  I do have a history of panic and anxiety problems and I am well aware of how panic attacks can feel.  This is very different.  I saw my doctor who insists it is a panic attack.  He wants me to see my psychiatrist who cannot work me in for a few weeks.  It wakes me up from very peaceful sleep at times.  I do not feel anxious when it starts to happen.  It has not slowed down for over 48 hours this time.  Before it would only be for 30 minutes or so at most.  At this point I am becoming more worried that it is not slowing down but both doctors tell me to just be patient.  I am worried this is something that needs to be checked into sooner than a few weeks from now.  I just don't know what.

Should I be insisting they see me at my primary doctor?  Should I request a second opinion?  I just can't sit here for the next few weeks like this.

Thank you for your comments!  I do feel like it is causing any anxiety I have right now.  Worrying about it is probably making it worse but I am doing my best to not freak out about it.  I will be calling this morning as soon as they open.  If need be I will head back to their after hours clinic.  I am normally a very energetic person but honestly right now I am so drained.  Thank you both for your comments.  I guess I was mostly looking for some validation that I am not overracting since it seemed like every medical professional I have dealt with this week does not seem concerned.   After working so hard to get healthy I do not want to let something like this go unchecked.

I agree with the other poster. Has your Dr done an ECG?

48 hours straight of a racing heart is not just anxiety.  And the fact that you can feel the difference is significant. There are lots of causes of palpitations. Some are minor but some are not.  Call your doctor back and tell them how long it has been racing and insist on being seen NOW. Ask for a referral to a cardiologist. If your doctor dismisses you, find a different doctor.

I have had a racing heart and it is a terrible feeling. For me, the palpitations CREATED anxiety. As with any other muscle, running a constant marathon is exhausting. If your BP is high at the same time, all the more reason you need to be examined.

Good luck!
