Good to know she's doing alright. Hopefully things will only get better from here. I've heard mumps are pretty miserable.
thank you for your ideas and insight... I have continued to research and learn!
thank you! she did have the MMR but they feel some college age students have lost some immunity coverage...so she was diagnosed with mumps and did pretty well over all...a night in hospital with IV steriods and antibiotics to cover anything else I guess...thanks for your insight! appreicate it much.
I would suggest posting the question in the EBV (Epstein Barré Virus) community. Mono is a form of EBV. You will get support to questions you have from others who have dealt with Mono or other types of EBV or who even have chronic EBV. Mono does come back. EBV is also related to CFS (Chronic Fatigue Syndrome) in that many who have EBV also end up with CFS. Don't assume this means everyone with EBV or Mono will have CFS, but there is definitely a connection. So, it would be worth asking the question in the EBV community.
Now she could still have mumps. It's possible that her mono has left her immune system fragile and she came across the virus. Did she have the MMR vaccine?
It's also possible that her mono came back- is her and her boyfriend just giving it back and forth to each other? 4 years seems like an excessively long time to be sick with it.
If she is so swollen she really needs to see a doctor. Just be clear to tell the dr that you aren't sure whether or not it's mumps. When a clinic knows that a person could have an extremely infectious disease (like mumps) they will put that person in an isolated room so that they aren't around people who are immuno compromised, elderly, or infants. It may be a little overcautious but it's important because it could be really infectious and cause an outbreak.
