Surgery

If the spleen is not only swollen but hard, is it possible to remove it Laparoscopically?  What are the pro and cons of this particular surgery?  What can I expect after surgery?  What kind of recovery time is involved?  Should I get a second opinion, or go by what my doctor says?

So many questions.  Please help, or direct me to the right web sight!!

Thank You so very much.

Hello,

Laparoscopic removal of enlarged, hard spleen is very difficult as the size of the spleen restricts the visualization and manipulation of the spleen.Open surgical splenectomy is preferred then.

Laparoscopic splenectomy is the surgical removal of the spleen. It differs from the traditional 'open' technique in that the procedure is performed through small incisions. This usually allows a much faster recovery and is significantly less painful.

After surgery, mild to moderate pain is common which can be there for any type of surgery. Patient is advised to have a modified diet starting with liquids and followed by gradually taking solid foods.Patient is also asked to resume normal activities such as showering, stair climbing, working, lifting, driving and having sexual intercourse after complete recovery which may take from 4-6 weeks.

You can read about this in detail from the following website:

Hope it helps.Take care and pls do keep me posted on how you are doing.
