various symptoms including panic attacks

My husband has the following symptoms- difficulty breathing sometimes- gets very winded over nothing, difficulty swallowing, many phobias- water, planes, bridges, tunnels, can't sit in the middle of a room only the ends, only back of a movie theater. He will not step into a hospital even to visit people. He easily has nightmares. For example we just went to see the movie the Bucket List and as a hypocondriac he thinks maybe he has cancer and he can't sleep well. He needs to sleep with some light in the room. He's had panic attacks
Are all these separate forms of anxiety or one big picture of a diagnosis? He refuses to go to a doctor, he'd rather not know and when I bring up he shouldn't suffer like this he says it gets worse if discussed.

Dear Rachel,

It looks like your husband is suffering from Somatization disorder. A diagnosis for a Somatization Disorder is applied to patients who chronically and persistently complain of varied physical symptoms or pain that have no identifiable physical origin.

As you pointed out your husband has many phobias, I think that unconsciously his psychological pain is expressed as physical signs and symptoms.

Ask him not to worry, and please tell him to see a psychiatrist. This can be treated antidepressants and cognitive behavioral therapy have been shown to help treat the disorder.

Tell him to see a doctor, if he stays like this its only going to get worse.
