Post chlamydia symtpoms....

I was diagnosed with chlamydia about three months ago, which was three weeks after exposure.  I took 1g of azithromyin and a 7-day script of doxacycline.  I subsequently tested negative twice but my symptoms of burning while unirnating, discomfort at the tip of the penis have not gone away.  Could this be prostatitis or could there be another infection that I haven't tested for that's causing urethritis?  Follow up gonhorrea, herpes and HIV are all negative.  During this time, I've also experience lower abdomen pain, urgency to uninate and unsteady stream.  Those symtoms have improved but the burning while urinating and penis discomfort are still present.  I've never had any penile discharge. I also bike ride about twice a week but it never bothered me before the chlamydia infection.  My uro inidcates it could be anxiety related but the symptoms are definitely real.  Any advice would be great..... thanks.

Hello Dr., I've still gotten no releif from my chronic urethritis, in fact its worse now.  It's been about 9 months now since I've been daignosed and treated for chlamydia.  All tests have come back negative except I recently discovered I am positive for Ureaplasma Urealectum from a swab culture that my uro did about a month ago.  I took a 7-day course of erythromycin for the UU but that offered maybe two days of relief and I have not been back for a test of cure since I am not even sure the UU is causing the problem.  My partner has never been tested but took 1g of Azithroycin way back in May for the chalmydia and just recently the 7-days of erythromycin with me.  At this point, the only thing I have tested positive for is the UU.  Why the consistent urethritis that keeps slowly getting worse?  The tip of my penis is raw and there is discomfort when it rubs against my underwear.  Is this chronic pelvic pain unrelated to bacteria?  I have dribbling when I unrinate and some mild urgency once in a while.  The only other abx I've taken are Levoquin for possible prostatiits - this also offered little relief.  Please help - I'm tired of being told this is in my head and this has now taken over my life.......thank you!

Hi there!

The symptoms of chlamydia urethritis may persist for a few weeks even after the infection has subsided and is believed to be due to the associated inflammation. This is likely to get better in a few weeks and should not be anything to worry about. However if the symptoms are more than mild, you may consider seeking a review with your treating doctor for possible secondary infections, inflammations, erosions etc.
Hope this helps.

Take care!
