I have pain in the tip of my penis after urination. Also a nagging pain in my groin.I feel the chills all day,and have this feeling of just feeling not well.Weak lack of energy. Is this reason to suspect prostateitis? Should I have a check-up?.I am a 63 year old male,

Hi,
Thanks for writing in. Recurrent prostatitis is an infection of the prostate that is often caused by some of the same bacteria that cause bladder infections. These include E. coli, Klebsiella, and Proteus. While it may be acquired as a sexually transmitted disease, the infection can also spread to the prostate through the blood stream, directly from an adjacent organ, or as a complication of prostate biopsy.

Did you undergo any diagnostic procedures like biopsy of the prostrate recently? The most important laboratory test is a urinalysis to help differentiate the types of prostatitis. The need for other blood tests or imaging studies like ultrasound, X-ray, and computerized tomography (CT) will depend upon the clinical situation and presentation.

In your case, as the symptoms recur with consumption of caffeine and having unprotected sex, I think it is more of a sexually transmitted disease. Get a STD panel done and encourage your girl friend also to get it done.
Consult your urologist for further assistance.
Best.
