Welcome to MedHelp and the WL&D community!             While there are many good and sound diets, it is important to choose one that works for you and one that you will be able to maintain.

Personally, I elected to count calories as it let me know where I was with my food intake.  Weight Watchers has a similar program that counts points. Other programs work by lowering your carbohydrates and increasing your protein.

If you elect to count calories, there is a website where you can search for the calorie content at calorieking.com         ... You can write your food in your journal and enter your calories here on MedHelp in the weight tracker.  It seems to help to journal our food in the beginning to help you know what you are truly consuming .. sometimes what we "think" we are consuming is less than what we are "actually" consuming.

It takes a calorie deficit of 3,500 calories to lose 1 pound.  That means you have to eat less calories than you are using in your activities.  This can also be accomplished by exercise.  Those calories you expend during exercise count towards the calorie deficit.

Try focusing on 3-5 pounds as a goal and don't worry about any other weight to lose.  Once you have achieved this, then CELEBRATE your success with a movie or something fun that does NOT involve rewarding yourself with food.  Then set another small goal and work towards it.  This is how I slowly and steadily lost 142.5 lbs.

Use your weight tracker, exercise and mood trackers here on MedHelp.  There is also a correlation between getting adequate sleep so you may want to use a Sleep Tracker as well.  Focus on 1 or 2 trackers initially and then add the others as you will use them. Visually, they will give you a graph of what you are doing and you can watch your progress.

So glad you are here!!!  Welcome, welcome, welcome!

Welcome.

We don't generally recommend any "diet".  There's are a lot of eating plans that will allow you to lose weight; however, most of the time, as soon as you resume your normal eating habits, you will gain the weight back.  In addition, any eating style that limits certain food groups is not good because your body needs all the food groups in order to get all the necessary nutrients to stay healthy.

We advocate lifestyle changes that you will be able to stick with from now on.  If you make sure you get all the various food groups, in the proper proportions and add in adequate exercise, you will lose weight.

You should also check with your doctor to make sure you don't have any underlying medical issues that could cause you to gain/retain weight, such as thyroid issues, insulin resistance, PCOS, etc.

It's very helpful to keep a food diary which lists everything you eat in a day's time, along with the amounts and nutritional values the food contains.  There are several websites that allow you to do this for free - spark people and live strong are 2 of them.

Eating several small meals/day and making sure that you get plenty of protein and fiber (both fill you up quickly and keep you feeling fuller longer) with each generally works well; however, there are some people who do not do well on this type of plan.  Make sure you get plenty of fruits and veggies and  low fat dairy.

Calculate how many calories you need daily to maintain you current weight, then create a calorie deficit to lose weight.  Check out either of the 2 web sites mentioned above to calculate your calorie needs.

Bottom line:  Eat a well balanced diet in the proper proportions and get plenty of exercise and you should be able to lose weight (assuming that you don't have medical issues to contend with).

Last, but certainly not least - read some of the previous posts, which are loaded with advice and ideas; and stick around for support and motivation!!
