Here's how I lost weight

I am a 78 y.o. white male in generally good health.

In the past 20 years I've come down from 226 to 175--180.  I did it with the following:

1.  avoid refined carbs--bread, crackers, pasta, etc.

2.  Atkins diet.  For first 6 months I was on the Atkins diet, almost no carbs, lots of protein (don't forget about bean curd, which you can flavor w/ vinegar, sesame oil, etc).

3.  I fast 2 days/week.  Max 600 calories/day, calorie-free liquids OK.  Takes some learning, but you can do it.

Congratulations on your weight loss.  That's quite an accomplishment, especially, if you're keeping it off.

We all know that it's best to avoid refined (simple) carbs, but those are a big downfall for many of us.   Diets like that Atkins Diet don't provide enough carbs and is one that most people can't stick with.  I see you did it for 6 months - I don't think I could stay with it that long.

I'm also not able to fast because my glucose levels go too low and I get weak, shaky and lightheaded.   I'm supposed to eat multiple small meals/day and I've been told not to go below 1200 calories/day.    I've tried to fast for a certain number of hours each day - like eating between noon and 8:00 pm and fasting the rest of the time, but that hasn't worked for me either.

I'm always happy to hear from others who have figured out healthy ways to drop the pounds.
