BV infection, misread antibiotics instructions.

Hi everyone,

I recently was diagnosed with Bacterial Vaginosis and was prescribed 14 tablets of 400mg of Metronidazole. I have been taking one tablet once a day for 6 days now. I was wondering why I still had symptoms and I went back to look at the instructions to see if it had any information, this is when I realised I should of been taking one tablet twice a day!

I’m away from home, so won’t be able to see my doctor. I know I should finish my dose, should I start taking two a day? Or should I visit a pharmacist and ask for advice? It’s been quite a bad infection and I’m just worried I’ve made the infection resistant to antibiotics with my silly mistake.

Would appreciate any advice, thank you!

In short, I would guess that the thing to do is to begin to take two a day, but check with your doctor to see if he wants to extend the dose so you have a full set of days with two per day.

If you can't even phone your doctor for advice (which would be kind of a surprise -- almost all doctors have night coverage and weekend coverage let alone someone during the business day to answer questions from patients) by all means see a pharmacist. I would tend to begin taking it correctly now that you know, but your doc might want to extend the dose to cover the full amount of days with the full dose.
