Why am I still spotting after a month?

Hello,

I am a 22 year old female who has irregular periods. I don't take any kind of medication except for an Antipsychotic for my bipolar depression, and anyways I have been bleeding for over a month now. It's not light spotting, but moderate. I was wondering what the causes for spotting for such a long time might be? This isn't the first time this has happened to me either. This happened one time also about 2 or 3 years ago.

Last time I went to see my gynecologist about it, they took a blood test and nothing abnormal showed up in said tests (or, they at least didn't call to tell me if there was). And they just threw me on birth control pills to regulate my period, which I didn't like. I want to know what might be wrong with me so I can fix the problem, not just patch it up with birth control pills.

I should also mention that I am not sexually active or anything like that so it's probably not an STD kind of problem.
