Is it spotting or periods?

So my boyfriend and I masturbated together for the first time. He did a handjob for himself close to me although I had worn my underwear. Then he washed his hands and fingered me. I'm not sure if he washed properly. It's been a few weeks. It's one week prior to my date of periods. I have gained weight on my upper half of the body but then I recently started drinking protein shakes so I'm not sure if it's an effect of that. I started bleeding few minutes ago but I'm unable to decide if it's periods or spotting? There are no clots and not much blood and the colour, I can't make out. It's not brown but it's not dark red either. It's kind of light. How do I know if it's not spotting?
