I am a 45 year old caucasian female and I was also recently diagnosed with PCV. I also find it funny how they keep saying it happens more in males but all I am finding is women with this disorder. I find it interesting that I also had a lot of problems with my periods since I started at the age of 17. I would sometimes have it for a month and then sometimes miss it for months. It is still messed up today (probably more to do with my age now).
I myself am not taking interferon or hydroxyurea but doing the phelbotomies and I am on 81mg of Aspirin per day. My Dr. did not want to start me on the hydroxyurea because of too many possible side effects.
Well I wish you well in your journey living with PCV.
Greetings,
As an African American meaning my dad from Africa and my mom born in Japan on American soil (military). 34 year old recently diagnosed with PCV I am going to say no. PCV is a blood retention condition. Now since you did not bleed the PCV may have been brought on by the elevated testosterone levels which may just be a hormonal imbalance. I have 5 kids and was told that I have had PCV for over 10 years in which I had 3 kids in that time. They say that since I had never had migraines in the past and they started about 10 years ago that I have had this condition since then. However I never had it tested until recently when my spleen enlarged. It is odd to have found your post because everyone keeps telling me that this condition generally effects older males. A load a crap if you ask me. I was searching for PCV to be associated with birth control I had taken that actually stopped my cycle.
Now I was wondering if you could help me with something. I have not yet started any regimens like interferon or hydroxyurea. Have you found the Hydroxyurea to be helping your condition?
