Why do I have a tail?

I have a really large tailbone, it sticks out and you can even see it. when i feel it, I can feel three bones, two close together on top and one right below them. It hurts when I lie down flat on a hard surface and I actually have to  lift one butt cheek to be comfortable. It also causes pain if i sit too long or lay on my back for awhile. I was just wondering if there was something wrong that is causing it to stick out, or for me to be able to feel three bones? I know its not normal, but is it something that I need to be worried about?

I know this is a little late, I don't know why, but your not alone! Mine is the same way, and its been like this since as long as I can remember .  Mine isnt very visible, but I can feel it. I have never broke my tailbone or any type of trauma , but if you ever find out ! Please write.  I just have always thought I have a some what of a tail.

It's your coccyx, the last three fused vertebrae of your spinal column.  For whatever reason, it seems your genetics coded for it to grow outward instead of inward or it could have been some sort of trauma that occurred (such as a bad fall that "broke your tail bone.") that was left untreated and caused it to grow back together improperly.  If it's causing you that much discomfort, I would talk to a doctor to see if there's any way to help.
