White stuff in cracks of nipples?

I notice this very rarely, but it has happened more than once and I just noticed it now. Sometimes it's in both, sometimes just one nipple. I'm not pregnant nor have I ever been, so I don't think it could be dried up milk. I never have any other symptoms except this white stuff. It comes right off and it's not hard but it's also not a liquid.

I found a forum where some people said it was oil secreted by your nipples? Someone else said dead skin. I just want to hear what you guys think. I've never really thought much of it but it would be nice to know what it means. Since I've never had other symptoms I don't think it's something serious and would be pointless to bring up to the doctor and be told that it's normal.

I plan to have a doctor appointment hopefully soon (have to get around to making the call and I'm a huge procrastinator) but I'll be sure to bring it up then. I have some suspicions that I have thyroid problems so my guess is it could be either that or birth control pills. I am not sexually active at all nor do I perform frequent exams.

MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL
Hello,
It can be due to galactorrhea. Galactorrhea occurs because your body is making too much prolactin. It can occur in a hormonal imbalance, such as from taking birth control pills, hypothyroidism, chronic breast stimulation, such as from frequent breast self-exams or sexual activity and rarely in hypothalamic disorders. Confirmed by examination of the breast discharge under the microscope and by serum TSH levels.

It is very difficult to precisely confirm a diagnosis without examination and investigations and the answer is based on the medical information provided. For exact diagnosis, you are requested to consult your doctor. I sincerely hope that helps. Take care and please do keep me posted on how you are doing.
