If he is using antivirals, it's down to about 2 days.
I wouldn't ever worry about getting it from him, unless you have sex during an outbreak.

Have you ever tested for hsv1? You could have it orally, like 2/3 of adults globally, and never know you have it.
My guess is that your period is causing your symptoms, or ovulation. You should track those symptoms, and talk to your gynecologist about them.
