Struggling with Pain

I have had so much pain the last three days that I just don't know where to put myself.

It started with a toothache and that turned into an abscessed tooth. The infection spread to my ear, my jaw and finally to my left eye which is nearly shut.

They say you forget pain and all with my surgeries,etc. in the past, they may be right.  I truly do not remember having this much pain....ever.

I am on mega-antibiotics and I go back to the dentist on Monday and then on to an Oral Surgeon to have the tooth removed. In the mean time, I refused the pain medication. Am I crazy? I am so afraid to touch that stuff and I know I am dyslexic when it comes to dosing instructions. When they say one every four hours, that means four every hour, right?????

I guess I am just dumping and looking for a cyber hug.

Please pray for hubby and the cats...they have all packed their bags and I do believe they are leaving by morning....LOL

I know this is an old thread but wanted to tell y'all what works for me when I have a toothache. A couple of months ago I tried this and it for real worked. I broke off a huge piece of my back tooth chewing on popcorn seeds. It didn't hurt at first so I didn't care...well, that soon changed..and before I knew it,...I WAS DYING!! My cousing suggested goody's powders....I was like.."okay???"...like he wasn't telling me anything new...then he told me to actually put the powder in the broken tooth....It was a freakin' miracle....It is definetely a great quick fix...which is, as a typical addict, what I'm always looking for. ......Hope this finds someone with a toothache....

You are always so strong.  Just the fact that you are in EXCRUCIATING pain and you STILL refuse to take the pills is almost inspirational!  I am sure you have gotten this taken care of, as this post is from the beginning of July, but I just want to let you know that you are a great example of how I want to be.  I admire you.  I hope you feel all better now!

I agree with Baron........pain meds really do nothing for a toothache in my experience.  Aspirin is the best, not tylenol......useless.

~~~sending you a MAJOR CYBER HUG~~~~  I've been there.
you can try the local anesthetic over the counter.  I hope you feel better!
Luv,
Nauty...........
Yes, hope it went well. I would have pointed out that the pain med's don't really help with toothaches, they just numb you to the fact it hurts. Aspirin is the only thing that seems to help.
PS if you need to, most dentists have a 24 hour on call service, and there are some Walgreens and other pharmacies in some cities that are open 24/7, so you could possibly still get something for the pain if you get worse tonight.  I know that nighttime always makes toothpain worse! then youre up all night with your tooth/head/ear/eye throbbing so bad!  sending you many healing vibes your way , IBK.
omg i am so sorry! I dont know how you have held off on the pain meds. Ive had so many horrific tootheaches like that, that it made me want to chop off my own head it was so bad. Seriously, you can get delirious from a very severe toothahce like that. I feel so bad for you. Ive been thru that way too many times including the infection causing troubles in the jaw and ear and throat from them. I hope the anti B's start working soon. xo xo xo
Kleen - I am all too familiar with attempting to numb an infected area.....its a very poor and exceedingly painful plan........   Oh yeah - I have heard that temporary filling stuff works best when generously applied to the entire toothline and then the mouth held tighly closed for a few minutes.........toss a tube of crazy glue into the mix for industrial strength applications......eagle
I know you guys are right but I already blew it. He is now closed until Monday.
Last night Steve went to the drug store for me and got that "temporary filling" stuff. You are supposed to put it in the tooth and it hardens like a filling. so, in typical addict fashion, I used the whole jar and covered three surrounding teeth. More is better, right? When I got to the dentist today he took one look and said "WOW". He had to chip away at it to get it off and take a look an some x-rays. What a mess!!
I did ask about the draining but he said no can do. It is not one lump, or whatever, it is spread throughout the area. He said he could not even give me Novacaine to try a temporary filling (a real one) because the Novacaine won't work with the infection. I have extra strength motrin that I am taking right now so that will have to do.
I don't understand any of this stuff.
thanks so much for listening guys....I SO needed to dump this.
Kleen - Both Sway and I have been in the same position within the last month I believe....I passed on the pain meds at first - then I got some tylenol3's - no chance of a buzz there and there werent enought to actually have to worry much about......we all have to leave the house some day - - I think that you could get a handful - not a pile..LOL .....and get along quite well..........we have learned a lot over the years - and you know yourself - so have a hug and take a (A) pill if you need one.....
OMG you poor thing.  You really need to get the pain meds. I know it's a scary thought but that's to much pain for a human to take. Give them to hubby to dole out. I really respect you trying to tuff this out, but you shouldn't be tortured like this.
If you could get the dentist to drill a drain hole in the tooth it would give you instant relief. I was a dental asst. for many years and we did this all the time. It's gross but it takes a lot of the pain away.  The dentist would drill the hole and leave me there to suction out the infection (pus). lol  It was cool, I suctioned their faces back to almost normal.
HUGE HUG FOR YOU!
