PET PEEVE

why do people reading your journal feel the need to point out spelling errors? It really upset me because i thought the journal was our own personal little area, and if we open it up to share our experiences, feeling or what ever, don't belittle it by point out mistakes...sorry will get out my soap box now

Even better tip. The free Firefox browser has a spell check too. And the free addon, AdblockPlus can eliminate all the ads.

Don't get so paranoid that you stop posting altogether now!!! But spelling errors, give me a break. I've changed my settings so that notes and messages are only seen by those that sent them and me. Try going to my site, my Journal is still open, haven't posted much, but then, haven't been here that long. I don't believe that any of my friends are able to read messages or notes received by my other friends. I feel much safer that way, and at least we can keep our conversations private, that way. But I know, it's so nice to keep in touch with everyone like this!
Stay strong and don't give up complete faith in humanity.

Heh heh.. it IS good practice. i wouldn't do it myself, although if the errors are particularly bad, it can make it hard to understand what you're saying.

here's a little secret; google toolbar offers a somewhat adequate spellchecker. I'm using it RIGHT now!

I just checked...well, three errors! corrected with a click, of course. :)

I saw a cartoon that showed a guy interviewing another guy for a job, and the caption read:  "Frankly, Gibson, we've already got plenty of people who can dish it out. We're looking for someone who can take it. "  I thought it was a hoot, but maybe its because I am trying to fill a vacant position in my office and have to wade through 45 applications this week-end.  The world is full of people who can't dish it out, isn't it????

It is pretty ridiculous to correct someone's spelling in their own freakin' journal...geez...Anyone responding to a journal post should be in the mindset of being helpful...if you can't be helpful or positive, don't respond..Sometimes, you have to ask yourself, before speaking, literally or in type-face, whether what you're about to say, can benefit you or anyone else...if not, you may need to consider your motives and intentions for what you're about to say....

We also need to consider the fact that not everyone has the same coping skills, and backgrounds, to handle things a certain way...and that there are often more than one "correct" way of doing or handling things...

Boy, you hit the nail on the head with that statement FriaryGrad.  So many times in all areas of life, people can't feel good about themself unless they are bringing everyone else down.  I try my best to steer clear of those people.

I'm with Lady67 -- I believe I can write a perfectly well, but reread some of my posts and realize that I didn't exit the same sentence I entered, got my hands on the wrong keys, or just lost my train of thought.  But like she says, if the gist is in there, I say WTH????

Maybe some people only feel better about themselves if they find fault with someone else????

Well they are your personal journals and you can delete posts from others. And you can edit your first entry. You can also put in settings whether it is open to the public, friends or yourself. I think it is too bad to correct someone's own journal, typing or anything. It's your journal.

You know for people reading this...when I am pm'ng with someone and I am saying something to the effect that you really need to decide XXXX  and then i always add (i am not saying this in a judgemental, mean or harsh tone or way....i am saying this to help you with XXXX i know that typing you can't hear tones so i want you to know HOW i am saying this)

Now of course I don't do this with my friends I talk to every day that already know my typing/tone!!! lol When it's someone new and new to the forum and/or recovery I really try to be gently with my words....b/c they are fragile and scared at that point.

Of course don't get me wrong...if the Care Bear gets upset she bites!!!! LMAO!!!! :)

you are so right, people need to be conscious of what they type.  Unfortunately this is a computer and it is hard to tell people's tone, but when they outright accuse of something and they know absolutely nothing about you, that is different.

I am sorry I am just a little ticked at a post I received and I am trying to get over it.

Sarah, yes there really is. Everything concerning addiction cant be sugercoated all of the time  but there are still ways to say things constructively without being hurtful .People sometimes need to be a little more sensitive in the way they approach things.

It's nobody's business what you put in your journal, if you chose to write everything in pig latin - that's your right.  I'm a stickler on spelling and grammar (thanks to my anal retentive mother!!), but I only correct people that irritate me...  Right or wrong that's how I do it!  (I can get a little haughty when I'm annoyed - so an apology to anyone I've done that to!!!)  I haven't been on the site as long as some of you have, but I've noticed that alot of people have been very critical of what others say.  I have also tried to be careful about what I say as someone more or less called me a liar the other day... And not to **** anyone off, but I've also seen a lot of "clique" behavior... I had hoped that wouldn't happen here on this website, but perhaps it's human nature?  I hope that everyone is able to speak freely, if we can't do it here where can we do it?

There is a difference between negativity and constructive critisism(?)  If i have a butt chewing coming my way no problem but if you slam me then i get all nasty.  I can handle the constructive type of opinions.  Oh and Joann..........im going to get all Mary Poppins on your carebears yet!!!!!!!!!  LMAO

I agree....I quit posting or putting my journals as public due to the fact that the few times I have (even my very 1st post) I get some kind of negative remarks....or stuff that is negative or hateful and NOT even RELATED to what I was asking about. I respond to people by posting.... but mostly then talk to them through PM's. I am sorry scaredmom that someone felt the need to do that.... I get flack about my CareBears? I mean come on??? What is wrong with having something cute and happy?

(ok sorry if this sounded negative...not my favorite day today! lol)

I say post in your journal what you wish if you want it to be open for everyone I would put this (when I left them out for people to read)
If you are only going to say negative or hateful things (in your case throw this in) or correct me PLEASE DO NOT RESPOND TO MY JOURNAL these are MY thoughts.

I didn't get too much said after that....but then I have chose to keep them all to myself.

Hope everyone is having a good day!!!

I am very careful about what i write anymore as there seem to be headhunters here and that is too bad.  I would love to post at times about what is bugging me or something but i am sure it would be ripped apart.  All of a sudden we have to watch every word.  I know not to get vulgar and all of that but come on.  Each day something new presents itself in this addiction.  I dont think we should have to sugarcoat it.

You can fix it where your journal entries are private and no one can read them.  I however find that reading other's experiences helps others who are going through the same thing.

I know what you mean Sara, I asked about people's experiences with withdrawl symptoms and was accused of having an ulterior motive for asking.

Some people need to get a life.

ohhhh boy I would be in really big trouble LOL  ..My spelling and grammar are lacking People need to be aware as well that for some people typing is not easy. I am dyslexic. I have come a long way but I will never be as good as most .I am glad some people have prefect grammar but they don't need to critique others that dont

It wasn't me.  I am an English teacher and sometimes I go back and read my posts and journal entries and think WTH.  I go back and forth from a laptop to a PC so I can never get used to where the keys are at.  Plus it doesn't help that I try to type too fast.

I promise I won't complain about grammatical errors.  I only do that when I am taking a grade. LOL.
