I will always verify everything if you ask me. The above info came from the Univ.of Michigan issued text. I DID always know (from my Mom) that peach pits and apple seeds could contain a form of cyanide and that's well documented...along with what's contained in insecticides.
Good night...
Thanks for that, Vicki. I was hoping you would know what the story was about AN and cyanide poisoning.
The story I had always been told was about pig-hunters here in NZ taking "snapsules" with them in case they were accidentally poisoned by opossum traps laced with cyanide and/or DDT.
You're right about always learning. I am certainly open to new sources of information provided it is verifiable and true.
Kind regards, Jeremy
No...it's not an urban myth apparently. It was a first line defense years ago for firemen, miners, etc exposed to large amounts of cyanide. There are newer ones now that convert the cyanide (depending on type) to a non lethal metabolite. They didn't use poppers though. They used amyl nitrate "pearls" which took several minutes to work.
Okay. That's it for me. I thought I was done with school!! We never stop learning though, right Jeremy?
HMMM...cyanide poisoning is so fast (seconds) I thought. Unless it's a small dose...Okay....hitting the books now...I'm curious!
I was always lead to believe that amyl nitrate was used medicinally as an antidote for cyanide poisoning. It may have just been an urban myth but if someone knows if this is true i would love to hear from them.
Oh and more on topic...This med is primarily used as a rescue med for chest pain/angina
as it dilates vessels in the heart, neck, and brain.
LMNO...Check you inbox in a minute. :)
Sorry Emily... my bad. I started the downward spiral.
On topic from THIS pint forward!

Never tried one of those 'Popper' things, but I sure wish they'd been available when I was in the hospital for a procedure that left me with a... well, nevermind. Suffice it to say that I wish they'd been available.
Are they addictive? My curiosity is peaked. Not that I want to go out and get a bunch or anything (says the addict)...
OOPS!! Emily,I'm sorry. I was writing while you posted...
You're right,of course. We were silly...
bmdad-- I think you could use the regular size BP cuff !! Wait...you said you only have one...are you implying you need two???
LMNO--If you only need an inch long piece of duct tape...I don't think you'd ever have a problem in the first place!!
What was this post about?? Cancer? No,you can not get cancer from an erection...
Hi everyone -
Please try and stay on topic, and perhaps ease up on some of the graphic descriptions. Not only do some have weak stomachs, others might be triggered.
Emily
I can't TOP that one but I have another anecdote along those lines and know what she SHOULD have done. It's a lot less painful:
Again as a young nurse (I'm still fairly young but I was really young this time! ) A gentleman came into the ER and that was exactly his complaint: an erection that wouldn't go down after A LONG TIME AT HOME. He was upset to say the least. We helped him to an exam room and had him lay down. I took a small, pediatric size BP cuff and wrapped it around his penis, pumped it up and locked it in the pumped up position. No pain, just some pressure he said. I put a warm blanket on him and left the room. Five minutes later I went back and...no more erection. Simple. I had read about it somewhere
but never thought I'd actually have to do that!!! So,if that happens to you again just take the big boy's BP!! Or tell the doctor. Needle in a penis!! Is she a sadist??? LOL
Ting...You probably wouldn't have heard of them for medical use. But,briefly here's one anecdote from my memoirs:
As a very young nurse I had a 30 yr old male patient. He was post op circumcision revision. For his own comfort, getting an erection was ill advised so the doctor ordered poppers at the bedside. They came in a box of 24. He was to "pop" each time he felt an erection stirring...I thought he was an addict because every time I was in the room he was popping on after the other! I reported my suspicion to his doctor...who about fell on the floor laughing his butt off!! I was still in a "learning curve" in those days!! Apparently, they work but not very well...I have no idea what's used now. Probably anesthesia!!!
I agree about the cancer relationship. It could be anything!!
So,Dave,you're having some troubles?? LOL
Oh and as far as the cancer side of it, I would be more concerned about what is in the food you eat or the shower gel you use or the water you drink. There are chemicals everywhere that may or may not cause cancer, poppers is just one among many
To prevent erection???? Wow! Never heard that as being one of the use's for them..Then I best stay away from them if I ever see them again..Got enough trouble as it is (chuckle)
The things we learn in this site at times,,interesting :)
No...poppers are Amyl Nitrate. I was just talking about them with someone the other day. They were very popular back in the day (70's 80's ) as a drug of abuse. Mostly used
during sex and "popped" at THE MOMENT and snorted. Hope this isn't TMI... Anyway,I know of them from the hospital ( I'm not lying ). We handed them out like candy to men,
who were post op circumcision, to prevent an erection. Go figure!!
It is a stimulant.
Kinda like those little ammonia-capsules that you find in first-aid kits? I have tons of those lying around the house.
Took a first-aid class many years ago, and my sustaining memory from the class (15 years ago), was when the instructor made us each break one of those things under our noses so we could see what it was like.
Not amusing.
Do people actually use those things to get high?
Its a larger than your average capsule that when snapped, the ingredient is breathable and is put under a person's nose to revive them or assist with a heart condition I believe..Its been so long ,,college days, but I'm pretty sure its a heart stimulant for emergency situations..
What the heck is a "Poppers"???
Poppers? God, haven't heard that word in 35 years..Thats a heart stimulant is it not? I would imagine after all these years if there was a risk it would be documented..Researching wikipedia would probably be your best bet on finding info as trdofbeingtrd suggests..It would come down to whatever the chemical makeup is and whether or not any of those ingredients have ever been associated with any cancer issues. I never personally have ever seen any info connecting the two, but extended use I imagine could create problems in the throat if its constantly being exposed to these chemicals...
Just in case no one here is able to help you out (which I doubt, there are some knowledgeable people on here), you can do a search on "poppers causing cancer" and go to the wikipedia link, it should help you out.
