Confessions but not of the bad kind.

I came to Med Help wow almost 3 years ago .At the time I had very little experience on the computer .I really did not like forums much because I have a learning disability  called dyslexia .My spelling level at that point was maybe 3rd or 4th grade level .There was a disconnect between the words in my head and what I could put down on a post .I remember my first posts. I would try to make them as short as possible and there were alot of things I could not say that I wanted to because it would not come out on the screen as it did my mind .School was very hard for me even though my oral skills were way above normal .I could not put it on paper .
It really effected my life it hindered things in life .I was afraid of trying new things  out of fear that people would make fun of me or assume I was stupid .Its was on this forum I was able to be accepted as I was .I know and always new not very post I wrote was or will be perfect and it would have typos and mistakes not once did anyone make me feel less of a person because of it .In the last three years I have gotten better .I will never be perfect. I was able to become a CL regardless of this because the members of med help looked at me as a whole person not just someone with a learning disability.
This gave me the confidence to try other things. I have since designed my own website and I run it .I could have never done this three years ago. I let my disability run my life .So I just wanted to thank everyone for accepting me just the way I am .We are capable of doing anything in-our life's as long as well believe in ourselves .So Thank you ....
Avis

PS plz forgive any typos or misspelled words in my post LOL

My son has Tourette Syndrome involuntary vocal and motor tics every year before I'd give a teacher the privelege of teaching my son I would spend at least an hour teaching them what his disability was and how to cope with it.I explained he had more abilities than disabilities and that's where their focus must be.When he was 12 the doctors wanted to put him on risperidone because he coudn't function in class due to the severity of the tics,It's an anti-psychotic used with some schizophrenics,I refused, so I took him out of school and did home schooling. He is now 24 and you couldn't meet a nicer person he is a youth leader at his church and well respected.People need to focus more on abilities.

Thanks for sharing- my husband has dyslexia, and has described EVERYTHING you have gone through.  School was hard for him, self-esteem issues, etc.  Good for you for overcoming the fear of others judging you- I know that has been very hard for my husband.  You are a very compassionate and intelligent person, and a few misspelled words can't change that!  :)

Didnt i tell you you were the brains of the bunch avis!!!  The more i learn about myself and the world around me i have come to the conclusion that people who have no knowledge about a disability are very threatened by that.  They cast their eyes and judgement on those people.  Calamity's situation is another example.  The church treats her sons like outcasts?  That is an outrage.  Instead of people judging someone why not come up and ask......i would think that would be better to have someone do that then form their own opinions when they know nothing of what they are talking about.

Hey Avis I always pictured you as a mega brain. I know you had some great answers for me. As a mom of two boys with a disability, I would like to add that it is great when a person with a disability gets feeling good and encouraged about themselves but is is so nourishing to them when thier peers give them love. A smile and some peer time change a life. My son even get treated like a outcast in church .  But missions in Egypt puts a smile on thier face.

I have learned from here I have watched over and over how other people spelled words at first I would look at others posts if I had to I would copy and paste there words over time. I learned to spell better .so the better I got the more confidance  and that right there helped me learn. When you are told over and over in school you are stupid it takes alot to undo that One ever judged me here and that gave me the confidance to learn without judgement .So thank each and every one of you for letting me be me ..

wow avis i never knew that about you! I mean Ive seen some typos but we all make them myself included (and i used to type for a living- medical transcription- and even though i can type super fast, i STILL make TONS of typos! its like my brain never learned to type correctly- it learned how to type fast, but never RIGHT lol. its scary they paid me money to type , really!) But for you to say your spelling was only at a 3rd or 4th grade level, really? You have come such a long way, how did you improve so much? Were you working a special program like phonics or something? I would never have guessed you had this problem. congrats to you for coming so far. we are very lucky to have you on board here!

Viki LOL I dont dislike suboxone there are some cases like if you were to tell me you were taking 30 vics a day Where the tylenol was putting your liver at risk for toxicity sub would be be a recommendation .I belive for people taking large amount of oxys and methadone that sub can be a wonderful tool to help as long as recovery care is involved as well. Now if you were to tell me you were taking 50 mg of vikes a day. I would not recommend it .I think with any drug you need to truley be educated on what you are taking before you end up from a frying pan into the fire .I have a few good friends here that used sub to get for there docs .So I would not say I don't like it I just wish it were regulated much better,

Thank you for the kind words :) They mean alot

Such a bittersweet story and brave of you to share...

Personally, I never noticed any signs of dyslexia! We all misspell (sp?lol) when typing so ...now I'm thinking you do better than most of us!!!      My impression of you from the get was that of a very strong, caring and, smart woman(who really does not like suboxone !)   I've learened so much from your responses to others and think you do a great job.  MH is so fortunate to have such bright people on board!

Hi avis,

I remember when i played a lot of hockey when younger I had a close friend that had dylexia, yet he was a genius, serious. I think your a smart women that gives a lot of yourself to this forum and who gives a **** about spelling. I never noticed anyway, most of us here don't always spell right either. We all have our faults or weaknesses, but like you said, as long as we believe in ourselves, we can do anything.

You have come a long way in those few years and we are lucky to have u here. Congrats on just being you:) Where is that ****** spell check, i need to check mine out too haha. Take care
