Need to know your dose and history a bit more to give you any good advice. Researchers that I have read indicate that they cannot distinguish the difference in quiting 20mg or 2 mg....its all pretty unpleasant. Although I cold turkey'd a dose over 100mg and it was horrible. But I survived. To taper and avoid the unpleasantries you need to keep dropping the dose.....some take it down to 1/2 mg and then 1/4 mg - - and at the end they dose every other day and then every third day. Dont get in too big of a hurry to get off...... Some clinics will "blind dose" you - eliminates a lot of the anxiety involved with quiting......
Sorry I don't know a lot about methadone, but many here do. How long have you been on it? Stick around here, there is a lot of great support and advice. You will get a lot more feedback about addiction on the other side, this is the social addiction community, the one just above this is the addiction substance abuse which talks more about our drug use and more support. Good luck and Welcome to our community:)
Well, although I've had no personal experience with methadone, I think of course anyone can say pretty confidently, that coming off of anything is pretty scary. I'm freaked myself and I'm off...and I've come off of another substance before. The MAIN two things I'm hanging onto right now, are 1) I did it before and 2) I felt SO much better after I got through w/d, than I ever did on the meds.
Support is CRITICAL. I don't know what I'd do without it. I hope you have some, and if you don't, that you get yourself some. Anyone whose shoulder you can cry on or lean on...someone who will force you out of the house when you are able. My husband did this for me last night. Although I'm petrified and in shock myself right now, I know I can tell you that we WILL get through it.
