help barbiturate positive

I went to ER with s/s SOB, tingling, tremors, muscle jerks and feeling my throat was closing up.  I had worked many shifts with stripping and waxing to floors.  I and many other had been experiencing headaches, coughs, and I experienced throat sensitivity.  I had been taking ibuprofen on regular basis for these headaches and took a generic unisom "doxylamine."  After taking the ibuprofen and doxylamine I woke up with not being able to breathe along with above mentioned symptoms.  I went to my hospital where I worked.  Next thing I know, the only thing addressed was that I tested positive for barbiturates.  I was treated like a criminal.  Please help.  I have never in my entire life taken a barbiturate.  How can I prove this is false.  It has cost me my 16 yr job which I am sure they are happy to get rid of a 56 yr old.   What can I do?  I would not even take a zofran from my daughter when I had a stomach virus because I did not have prescription in my name.  I feel this is crazy and unjust.  I am also a blood donor and would never do anything to compromise my job or status as blood donor.  thank you.

Absolutely go and get a blood test ASAP. There are many things that can cause false positives and it's easy enough to get another test done that is more specific and accurate. I would fight this tooth and nail, especially if your job is on the line. I'm sorry you are going through this and hope that it all gets straightened out very soon. Good luck to you.

Hey I was doing some looking around and found another thread here on our forum where someone else had a false positive.

I'll give you the link so you can read that thread.  One of the comments in this thread says that NSAIDS can cause a false positive for barbs....and you had been taking ibuprofen....so maybe the links in this thread will help you....sure hope so:

I would demand a blood test. If you had barbiturates in your system then it will tell. If not then you may be able to clear yourself. Do it immediately. If they won't then ask you doctor to help you get one done ASAP. Like tomorrow.

Oh I am so, so sorry this has happened to you.  I don't know the specifics of what might have happened to cause a positive test for a barbiturate....but I HAVE read that false positives happen sometimes to totally innocent people.  Hopefully, one of our nurses or someone with some specific knowledge about this will come along and help.

Hang in there......it will all work out.......keep the faith~
