I'm frustrated and a little nervous!

Hey guys!  Hope you are all having a good day.  It has stormed here for so long that I am expecting animals to start going by the house, 2 by 2!  So I am hoping to have some better weather.

Now...I am kind of frustrated by these headaches that I am having and am seeing my doctor for a post op visit tomorrow.  It has been 6 weeks since my hysterectomy. I don't know much about meds to treat headaches, as I have never really had too many of them.  Ibuprofen, BC Powder, Tylenol, Sudafed, Excederin.....not working.  That is the strongest thing I have taken.  If you guys have any ideas, I can ask my doctor about them.  I know he will let me take something, but I have no clue what to ask for.  In the past, I would have just taken the strongest thing he would give me!!! : )  I would usually just listen to whatever HE wanted me to do and not taken any responsibility on myself.  I would just really like to go in there a little more informed!

I'm also a little nervous about it, so keep me in your thoughts tomorrow.  I have to be able to say NO if he offers "a short term opiate solution" until my hormones kick back in!  I'm thinking maybe that is why I am having the headaches.  We will see.

Hi~   I'm confused.  (LOL)     "until my hormones kick back in"...what do you mean?
Did you have an oophorectomy, also? Or did they leave your ovaries?   If your ovaries are there,so are your hormones.

Ovaries there.  I thought the same thing as you.  Ovaries=Hormones so why did they say that the hot flashes and hormone junk is normal?  I had been taking YAZ for a long time and went off it suddenly.  That may be the hormone issue.  Don't know and don't care.  I just want it to go away!  My pharmacist said that his wife had the same problem.

Hey girl,

I'm sorry to hear you are having trouble with headaches. I too don't get them often so when I do I think I'm a bit more sensitive to them. Have you tried some Naproxen (Aleve)? As far as anything prescription, I'm not sure, but maybe something like Imitrex? I don't know if that is for more long-term or if it works right away but do know that is indicated in the treatment of headaches.

Your doctor may recommend something like fioricet which you will also want to stay away from. They often times say that it isn't addictive but it is. And remember things that don't have a very high potential for abuse definitley does with someone who is already an addict, but I'm sure you know that.

Hang in there, you will come through strong as always!!!

Thank you, Jacky!  I think Vicki would KILL me if I came home with Fioricet tomorrow!

What you said is exactly why I am nervous.  My doctor tends to think that things like Darvocet or Codeine are pretty harmless, but he just doesn't understand that I can literally get addicted to water if it feels too good when I swallow it!!!  That is why I said I will take responsibility myself and go in there a little more informed so I don't get sucked in to something like the "very harmless" tramadol!!! : )  NO WAY!

Who's "they" ?

Headaches are so quirky. There could be 100 reasons for them. It's usually a process of elimination.  The Sudaphed helped you so that could be a clue.  Also, neck muscles are culprits.     There's an old drug called Midrin that they MIGHT offer you. Say "no thank you".  It's not an opiate but I wouldn't trust it...it has abuse potential. Trust me.
A long time ago,I used to take a funny little cocktail and it worked : Alka Seltzer and
Benadryl.  But,I know Benadryl has an idiosyncratic effect with you.
The doctor will have ideas, too. You could try a triptan to rule out migraine.

That's all I've got~  Do you see the doc tomorrow?

They=Dr. and his nurses.  (All 3 of them that I have talked to so far about the hot flashes) And the pharmacist.  The pharmacist said that there are "other organs in the body which produce estrogen besides the ovaries"  ie uterus, I guess?  I don't know.  I have never heard of such a thing.  I thought that is why they left the stupid things in the first place.  It seems to be temporary, according to the info.  (pharmacist printed a handout on the whole thing, because I was looking at him as though he was crazy)

Yes....tomorrow at 2.  ICK!

Yes...I would kill you.  I'm on my way to Jackie's to get her straight and insist she never say that word!!!!     Jackie :   I nearly killed myself on that sh*t !!!    It was my DOC.

Okay...deep breathing now...a little panicky...breathing....OKAY!  Better!

Imitrex works great,it's fast, and it's generic. It doesn't work on tension headaches but kills a migraine in minutes. It's not at all addictive. It would be a great "rule out" drug.

MUWAH !

Doctors vicki. I had a doctor tell me fioricet was not addictive when I was pregnant with my son because that is what he wanted to give me as I was suffering these really awful headaches for a couple of months. I knew better!

I had headaches after my hysterectomy.  My doctor told me that this was normal but i had mine a 100 yrs ago too.  They took my ovaries also and put me on premarin as that was the answer to everything back in the day.  I no longer take that either......So what was the point of MY post?  No clue!!!  I do remember the headaches tho and mine did go away after awhile......

Just say NO to opiates~~~~sara

Sorry to hear about the headaches.  I have had success with Imitrex and it is non addictive.  I have also taken Norco (similar to Vicodin) with some success, but it can be addictive.  Good luck

I am so sorry Vicki! I realized after I posted that it was you DOC. I already did know that, i'm sorry! I guess it was just the first thing i thought of because that was the first drug that was offered to me on one of the rare occasions that i was suffering headaches, which is usually only during my pregnancies!

Hi Sara~~    Primarily it's the ovaries and then the estrogen travels to the uterus after getting the message from the follicle stimulating hormone in the ovary where the estrogen is hanging out in the oavarian follicles. None of this happens without our brain and pituitay gland but there's no estrogen there. Adrenals have cortisol...  I just can't think of another organ or gland that produces estrogen. I don't think there is one. That's why so many gals are on HRT.
With hysterectomy,so many assume that it's the removal of everything when it's not.
So...that's all I've got.

I really think it'll be ok, but I have been rationalizing all morning how it would probably be ok to take something for a couple of days, if he offers, since my head has pounded so badly.....WHAT?  I can't even believe I had that thought.  My mind is a messed up place some days.  That is what makes me so nervous.  I have a hard time saying no.......OBVIOUSLY!

Jacky...LOL it's okay.  I'm not at all sensitive to that...I'm so over it...but I want to save the world from it now and TH knows I'd be p*ssed !!     And,yeah,I know the doctors can be so blase' about it. That's how I was able to get it for so many years and years. Not their fault...I knew better.

Love ya ~

I remember something that does produce some amounts of estrogen when my dad was sick.......better search the archives of my memory bank!!  I think most doctors now realize that leaving the ovaries if possible is better.  Complete hysterectomies are hard on a person.  I was 25 when i had mine........

OMG Sara...that's young!!   Well,I'll check my books because now I'm wondering...
I had a hysterectomy in '95. Never had a headache...but then again,I was treating myself
for potential headaches (LOL) so one didn't have a chance!!!

TH~ I'm calling the airlines now...I'll go with you to the appt. I feel strong and don't like opiates. I'd be perfect. Should I bring a bathing suit? Oh...I'll just wear it!

Stop thinking so much!!   Try one of the triptans.  You can so no. If you don't,trust me,you'll feel like the worst crap.  Remember what you went through with me?? Don't
go there...it's ugly.
You'll be fine~

well I suffer from Migraines and what I found helped me was just a straight anti inflammatory like Naproxin I take 550mg twice daily and they do help me however everyone is different.  My migraines are from the air pressure going up and down and with this crap weather being all over the place that tends to make them worse...so it may not have anything to do with ur surgery...get ur back looked at as well some woman who have had the same surgery are complaining of the same thing and it turns out its caused by ur back being out for compensating for painin the front...good luck hun!
