Hi and welcome to the forum...the switch from one to the other should be fine as far as not going thew withdrawals during the transition ....narcotic pain meds are a funny animal I was in more pain on them then I am now that im off them...the physical dependence they create can actually cause the brain to create the pain to get the drug its a viscous cycle
once broke you may find like myself and many others that your pain can be managed with plain old 800mg ibuprofine ..witch never worked at all for me wile I was taking narcotics
it takes a wile to get it all out of your system then once cleaned out your pain clock sorta resets itself and you my find your pain a lot more manageable....the problem with narcotics is you always build up a tolerance to them after trying every conceivable pill the finely started me on 30mg of methadone over 6 1/2 yrs it spiraled into 150ml of methadone and then that quit working for pain so I finely said enough is enough and decided it was time to get off everything....it has been one of the best decisions of my life...im no longer chained to a pill bottle and my pain has became quit manageable..I still live with some pain...my back still has 2 herniated disks and 3 deteriorating but life is so much better now that im off the narcotics...you may want to try it to see how you do...there is also a pain management forum you can check out also...good luck and God bless.....Gnarly
Thx for the advice us I heard that stuff is the devil but with the pain imin and how hound I sm I'm afraid that's where I'm going to end... I'm to the point where I just want to get off everything and see how much pain is there w\out the pills! I know these doctors are trying to help me but I wonder if I just took my normal meds if I'd be ok... I've tried tramadol darvocet and they left me crying in pain at nights and not sleeping at all! So I understand I prolly need to make a choice
Be careful that 120mgs a day, well you wouldn't really be taking 12 a day unless you don;t sleep or wake up and take them it would be more like 8/day. Try to take them only when you truly need them for pain as you will build up a tolerance and have to start taking more. Believe I know been there. And if all possible stay away from oxycontin they WILL take over your life. I hope this helps you Good luck.
They have switched me to 10mg percs this was all done at a pain clinic my regular dr and rheumatologist were the ones prescribing the vicodin!!! The pain clinic says we will start here and check in 2 weeks I get 2 every 4 hours so 12 a day if that helps! I hate these drugs but their the only thing that let's me live... With this dosage should I be ok?
Do not go to oxycontin It is hell to get off of. The make 5 mg IR (immediate release) oxycodone without tylenol. It is the same as 5mg percocets without tylenol. I would caution you could still become dependent on them as they are still opiods.
No you should be fine, you need to get off that amount of vicodin for sure. I heard the FDA is considering banning it because of the liver toxicity and ods of tylenol and I hope they do - All the narcotic painkillers that contain tylenol should be pulled. I never really understood why tylenol had to be added anyway it has no effect when paired with a narcotic that will only outweigh its (questionable) effects. At best its not really good for more than minor pain anyway. It seems obvious that the risk of liver failure from a drug with such a narrow margin between a safe and lethal does is much greater than any possible benefit
I would seriously doubt you'd get withdrawals going from Vicodin to Percocet. However, Percocet also has Tylenol in it. Oxycodone does not. I switched from Percocet to Oxycodone and then Oxycontin because I didn't want the Tylenol.
What kind of doctor do you see for your conditions? I was seeing an orthopedic for arthritis along with some other conditions and they had me on Vicodin initially. Then I went to a hand specialist. After many failed surgeries, I wound up at the pain clinic, which I feel is a better place to deal with the pain of your disease (not the treatment necessarily.) I still see my surgeon and my primary care but my meds come from the pain clinic.
It seems like you take a lot of pills. What dosage are you taking? maybe you're not getting the right amount to treat your pain. I think the pain clinic docs are better at assessing what you need for pain. They can also give you a long-acting medication which may help you cut down on the number of pills you take.
Also, there is a pain management forum here that you may find helpful. I've got some great information from them.
Good luck.
Did I read that wrong? Sorry, long day....
Hi~ There would not be any withdrawal unless you are going to a much lower dose of pills per day. Percocet IS stronger so you shouldn't need 20 pills per day. How much are you prescribed per day? Is it 5mg or 10 mg?
Sorry for your pain~
Vicki
Percocet is stronger than vicoden. You probably won't have any w/ds moving from a lesser strength drug to a stronger one.
Are you wanting to quit taking pills or are you interested in whether or not you'll have w/ds moving from one drug to another.
Rue.
Hi & Welcome,
The withdrawal for both is pretty much the same. Have you spoken to your doctor regarding your fear of withdrawal/addiction? He/she may be able to taper you off of your current medication with less withdrawal symptoms and then recommend something that is non-narcotic.
Let us know and if you decide that you are going to go off of the meds, we will help you through it.
