Methadone, Need recomendations

I am a below knee Amputee.I go threw seriously bad Phanton Pain.I was prescribed almost everything under the sun at on point or another. Eventually I asked my doctor to prescribe me one and a half methadone a day.!5mg. Been on it about a year and a half. I want to get off it because I can tell my tolerance is going up and I'd rather deal with the pain instead of go threw an addiction of 50-120 mgs a day because I have a friend that is perscribed like that and I say "No thanks".Here's my question.How bad is it going to be on me if I tapper myself off about 5 mg's a month, til eventually getting off completly.What can I expect and could anyone give me tips to make it easier.Thanks and God bless

HI ....I came off methadone and the best way to do it is slowly....im not clear on how much your on right now so it would be helpful if you could clarify that...you have been on it long enough to go thew withdrawals but from the best I can tell from your post it sounds like you have kept your dose low...the main thing with tapering off is to keep to a taper and not yo/yo your dose up and down ....once you reduce your dose you have to stick to it
even if your not feeling well because of it..there is no completely comfortable way of doing this but if you taper properly you can keep the discomfort to a minimum...I have a good taper schedule given to me by a neo/natal nurse that brings babys off heroin methadone oxy ext ...I used it and it worked well for me....we no longer post tapers in the open forum but I will send it to you via the messenger so check your e/mail in a few minutes ...the main thing is just know it is possible to get off this stuff methadone is a lot stronger then most people think and in the lower doses you will feel even a 1mg drop in dose...attitude is really important ...tapering takes discipline and perseverance but with determination you can get thew this...keep posting for support we are all here to help and want to see you succeed good luck and God bless.....Gnarly

Hi welcome to the forum.
One of our community leaders came off methadone slowly I am sure he will post soon.I do know slower tapers make it eisier and you are right its better to get off it know then when you are on a high amount .Do you have any ideas about how you are going to deal with your pain.
