hey all... new problem!!

Havent posted in a few days, ive been doing good, keeping myself extremely busy!!! On day 8-10 not sure been that busy, my brother asked me to start playing flag football again and I thought that would be another way to stay active and add another item to my schedule. So we played first game tonight and was doing really good lol until I went up for pass and got hit in the back and came down on side of my foot. Now I'm 6'2" 215 and it didn't go well!! Heard a snap and felt the pain, way worse than when I broke arm this summer playing softball. Im sitting in my chair with a softball size spot on side of my ankle, my wife still doesn't know cause I was doing good solo with my pill addiction, she's pushing me to go to ER and I don't wanna go at all cause they cant do anything on Sunday anyway, just give me percs or vics and I'm not sure what to do. I know its broke, and its extremely painful. What other types of pain meds is there for this type of pain? I'm not craving pills but damn it hurts!!

Hi there. Sorry to hear of your accident. I have had to take pain meds a few times since getting clean due to kidney stones. Not for long, usually three days but once it took five days to pass.

First I have somebody hold for me. Second I try to take less than I can, and add 4 OTC ibuprofen which equals 800, which in your case would be good for the swelling. I haven't gone through wds again from this.

I have had many broken bones and the pain is intense, but for me usually only 5-7 days before it could be handled with Toradol or some other non narcotic med. Trans do seem to help broken bones. So I'm not saying take them, but I am saying there comes times on occasions we do need narcotics. If you have someone hold them, and take the minimum, you're not giving up your clean time. You shouldn't have to suffer. If its unbearable, don't feel guilty in seeking relief. Either way, you should be feeling much better by weeks end. Good luck!

When I broke my jaw, I just grabbed the bull by the horns and rode it out. After about 3 days it let up quite a bit, but I hadn't been an opiate addict yet. Hope you feel better soon, whatever happens, we will always be here to help you figure all this out.

Thanks Vicki, my mistake, I was thinking Vic's are codeine, but they are actually hydrocodone, which is synthetic codeine.

Hi- If you DO take the Tramadol, it's okay to take Motrin with it but check about anything else you might take. Tramadol doesn't mix well with a lot of other meds. For example....you're taking Adderall, right? Check on the compatability.

For orthopedic pain, Tramadol seems to work well. It also has that antidepressant component which is good because people are more likely to get a little depressed after an injury, ortho surgery, etc...so doctors tend to order it more often for those situations.

Keep your leg elevated!  How are you do with crutches?

Hi Bullman Geez I'm sorry for to read it is broke.. Do not suffer !! Take a tram as prescribed, It will help but with the depression you are dealing with be very careful that you do not take but for physical pain. also elevate and Motrin if you have any It is good for swelling and pain. Your Dr. can prescribe 800mg that would help but you have to make sure you are drinking a lot of water for they are not kind to your kidneys. I would speak to your Dr. about depression and maybe getting a lil help while you go thru the process of recovery It is not easy to deal with when we have it naturally Depression. You would have to taper off these also at some point thou. As for having to go thru wd again.. anytime we take a opiate our body brain will latch onto the memory, I have had wd after just a few days It depends on how long you have been using and how long clean I believe. You are early in your recovery so anyway you look at it You will go thru wd if you have a need for pain meds for a few days. How intense would be the question and that would depend on how long you needed the pain med and how much you took.. You really should speak to your Dr. about your concerns as that is what he is there for. As far as your Doc. I'm a addict all drugs are my Doc. It is unfortunate that you got hurt so early in recovery Just be wise while you get well from the break Try to be positive keep it up Ice under your knee and lay over toes/ foot do all the things you need to keep the swelling down and that in turn will help with the pain. Sorry so long winded and I hope I made this understandable and I do wish you a speedy recovery..

Hydrocodone is synthetic codeine, similar to the natural opiate in Vics. All pain killers are addictive, they mimic the natural pain killers our brain makes. You may try anti inflamitory, ibuprofen and keep it elevated. Part of the pain you are feeling is that your brain hasn't started making it's own pain killers yet. I think if you take them more than 3-4 days you will likely have withdrawal again. If you stay at a lower dose than you used to, it likely won't be as bad. A friend hurt himself about 2 months ago. He had been clean for several months. He took percs for 2 weeks as prescribed and all his withdrawal symptoms started over. Just keeping it real. I want you to know what may happen, no matter which pain killer you take. If you can handle it, it may be better to lose sleep from pain rather than detox again. That is your call for sure.

Thanks for the info, i prob will not take them because from what ive recently read they arent that good for pain, and im not depressed (yet). Are hydrocordones any less addictive or is W/D better worse than vics? I'm not sure what to do about it, it swelled up pretty bad last night and I didn't sleep much and pain was around 7-9 id say on scale. If I take as prescribed do you still get wd? I'd like to stay away from vics and percs if possible for fear of relapse. Any other pain meds that work ok but aren't as addictive? Thanks everyone who's posted, helps alot!!

I was on Trams and it is the worst to detox from! Please do not take more than needed they can also cause seizures! They say they are not an op but they
affect us just like them! I personally would never take them again but if you need them for pain please be careful!

Tramadol are an opioid like drug with an antidepressant effect. Long term use can really lead to a mental detox that takes awhile to recover from. I never found them to be terribly effective for my pain. I never built an addiction to them, so not sure what a safe amount of time to take them is. I would prefer a fast acting, real opiate, like codeine or morphine for severe pain only. Having your wife hold them and monitor how many you take. I feel for you, so I wanted to post. Someone with more Tram experience will be along soon. I have a small farm outside of Austin Tx, so I know what 6-10wks means and how you are likely gonna Cowboy up and work anyway. Try not to push too hard.

Im doing ok, went to specialist to hear the inevitable, that I did in fact break my ankle, and am in a cast now. Said id be off for 6-10 weeks!! Which is not good news, so I'm hoping I continue to be a fast healer. They gave me tramadol, ive never heard of them, so I haven't taken any. Anyone have any knowledge on them. Thanks

As of now im able to tolerate the pain and i dont mind not sleeping much since i dont have to worry about working tomorrow. And yeah if I can get by with ice and otc pain meds I'm going to try. Just anxious about mind and being offered legal script and going through w/d again. I really dont know but I assume you still go through w/d even if you take as directed right? Again thanks everyone

A broken ankle, leg etc...really hurts so go to the ER, get it set in a cast, and take the pain med. Ask your wife to hold them for you and that can be for any reason...
You might need surgery so get it checked ASAP, okay?  Although it can wait until the morning if you can put up with the pain.  Take some Motrin and put some ice on it for now and keep it elevated.

I'm sorry this happened to you...just what you needed, huh?  Let us know how you are...

Hi Bullman I'm sorry to read that you had hurt yourself. I had broken my foot really bad and did not go to the E.R. but my reason was I was drunk and they do not treat a drunks pain. I also waited till the next day 8 years later I'm still dealing with it. You are right they will give you pain med but they will get x-rays and at least support properly till you can see your Dr. A break usually does not swell as much as a strain but you never know. As for pain meds I would guess that would be up too you but if you do need them do not suffer but be wise about it. Because you use a pain med responsibly as directed, we do not relapse we are still in recovery Be up front that you want only a few if you do get some our at least turn them over to your wife to be doled out. Many have had to use pain meds after getting into recovery You just have to be upfront and honest this keeps us accountable. I sure hope it is not broke and that you heal quickly ! Congrats on your Recovery !! lesa

Go to the ER and see what they say.  Many people have had accidents after getting clean and had to go back on pain killers.  They have been successful at not returning to abuse.  If the pain is so severe that you need opiates just be very careful.
You can ask the doctor if there is anything that is non narcotic  I really don't think there is.
