HI dont know about the dope thing but this is a great post sao many people detox only to find themself in the same jam a few months later possibly with food sex gambling or even shopping on a worst not many find them selfs using again we have a lot of members that have and still do come back time after time like you I go to N/A the meetings and 12 steps really work on the very way we think as addicts I can not stress this enough thanks for the post...Gnarly
I thought you'd get a kick out of that. Momma was always right and told it like it is :-)
R. just read your post. Funnnny! (giggling)
I had some great dopamine surges today!!! Went to a county fair and rode a whole bunch of rides and then topped the day off with mini donuts!!! lol
you're both goofy, and I like you BOTH like that!!
No worries, Vic. It was a great place to ask the question! I certainly wasn't offended by anything you said.
You don't have to close down anything, babe. It has been a good exchange of information.
And you already are "goofy"....and I like ya like that....
Oppps Stayed with this question in my Journal. I guess we can close it down..........................................................................................................
Ok you guys. It had me wonder after we said that in my Journal Connie. But now we did get some good info. I am still a addict to and I am trying to stay safe in recovery and not be Dopey any more just Goofy. I also would like to come up with a new Dopamine Drink and call it "Happy Aide" we have joked about this one on here as well..I just was curious about the term. Well I guess I should of stayed it in my Journal..lol
Just to lighten things up, guys.....my comment about dopamine and "dope addicts" was said in jest and in fun on Vic's journal. But, I will tell ya...regardless of it's technical historical meaning......I LOVE surges of dopamine....and I'm also a recovering dope addict.....:):):)
dope
adj. cool, nice, awesome
i.e. Yo foo that new stereo system is dope!
--Urban Dictionary
I'm sorry but that's been bothering me all day. I forgot to include the above definition!!!!! I know it's not technically related but it's important to me. ty! :) :p
During my first marriage, way back in the day, I was growing a few weed plants that my Italian mother in law discovered. Had I gotten caught the courts would have forfeited our house. She spoke very little English but got her point across: "MAKING THE DOP STUPIDO!!!" So I guess that's the Italian pronunciation.
Vic, thanks for this interesting post!
Meegy & Ben..Thanks for the education! Sarah, thanks for the grounding. Love you all (smiling in Boston @ 5:00 AM.) Bigmouth here, has nothing to add for once.
Wow you guys thanks for the Education!!! I just love it..Very, Very interesting. I know that drugs do hit different receptors like I found out that the Adderall I was doing hit the Dopamine and the Norepinephrine, and the Benzo hit the Gabba and of course we know what the Methadone and other Opiates hit.. Wow I wonder if it would of helped knowing all of this way back when..Ya! Right, like should of, could of..These are the kind of things I am learning now and find it so so so interesting..
Thanks Gang
Bless
This is a bit too deep for me tonight!! I have to give myself a KISS...Keep It Simple Stupid~Off to Metal Mania land!!
You know, I always thought so, but your question made me do some research. It turns out that the two are unrelated OR dopamine was actually derived from the word "dope". This was easy to deduce, because dopamine wasn't discovered until the 1950's, and the word "dope" had entered the vernacular at some point before 1900. Using "dope" to denote a stupid person is recorded as far back as 1850, and using "dope" to denote drugs was recorded in the 1890's. Given that the scientists who discovered dopamine knew it was linked to reward and pleasure systems, I would not be surprised if they did use the word "dope" to derive the word "dopamine", especially because the "amine" part refers to a specific type of molecule that dopamine is, and so the literal translation of "dope-amine" would be "drug molecule".
dope--'1807, American English, "sauce, gravy, thick liquid," from Dutch doop "thick dipping sauce," from doopen "to dip" (cf. dip (v.)). Extension to "drug" is 1889, from practice of smoking semi-liquid opium preparation. Meaning "foolish, stupid person" is older (1851) and may have a sense of "thick-headed." .... '
this is from the Online Etymology Dictionary. I don't know if there are rules about quoting things on our site, so maybe this will be removed. So it takes its name from the liquid aspect of smoking opium and then carries the word "doop" because of that ... it's a kind of weird progression as far as etymology goes, imo ...
good question, Vic! as you know I am particularly interested in the use of that word ... lol
Some substances imitate natural neuromediators and take their place on their receptors. Morphine, for example, binds to the receptors for endorphin (a natural "morphine" produced by the brain), while nicotine binds to the receptors for acetylcholine.
Other substances increase the secretion of natural neuromediators. Cocaine, for example, mainly increases the amount of dopamine in the synapses, while ecstasy mainly increases the amount of serotonin.
Still other substances block a natural neuromediator. Alcohol, for example, blocks the NMDA receptors.
It always blows my mind that all our sensations of pleasure can be traced directly to specific chemical and electrical activity in our brains.
